Rain and new moon improve local fishing

Jim Keck

Key Points

Hello Folks,

I want to thank y’all for all your prayers. We finally got some rain… and then we got some more rain. I’m sure all this rain will help the lakes and rivers in our area that have gotten so low.

Remember to keep our friends to the north up in the panhandle in our thoughts and prayers after hurricane Isaias hit their area.

We had the new moon last weekend, and it’s got the fish to bitin’! Actually, the bass fishin’ is pickin’ up in most of the lakes in our area.

I’m gettin’ some reports that the specks are startin’ to bite in Lake Woodruff up in DeLeon Springs west of Daytona Beach. Most of those specks are bein’ caught by trollin’ jigs in open water.

The bass fishin’ on Lake Fairview just north of Orlando is gettin’ better. Some nice big bass are bein’ caught in the Wednesday Night Tournament that’s held there every Wednesday night.

I’ve also gotten some good reports that the bass fishin’ has been good to real good in the Harris Chain. The water has come up a few inches.

I saw where it took over 20 pounds to win a local bass tournament last week!

The Wednesday Night Shootout on Johns Lake over in the Clermont area last week was won by Hunter Ray and Collin Britten. They brought three bass to the scales that weighed in at 7.95 pounds.

Big Bass for the night, which weighed in at 4.15 pounds, was caught by the team of Lou Gibbs and Gary Batchelor.

The bass fishin’ on the Butler Chain out by Windermere is goin’ strong and folks are catchin’ lots of keeper-size bass. You can catch’em early in the mornin’ on topwater baits along the shoreline grass.

As the sun gets up, move to a little deeper water and try a chatterbait, lipless crankbait, or a plastic worm. Some nice bass are bein’ caught on a slow-sinkin’ Senko type bait around the pepper grass patches located throughout the chain.

Keep an eye out for the divin’ birds. It’s gettin’ to be that time when the schoolers will be feedin’ on the baitfish pods.

You need to have a lipless crankbait tied on to one of your rods, so you can pick it up at a moment’s notice.

They’re still catchin’ plenty of panfish down on Lake Kissimmee. Most of those panfish are bein’ caught in the pads on red worms.

The bass fishin’ down at the Headwaters is still doin’ good. The rain has dropped the water temperature down to around 80 degrees.

The topwater bite has been good very early in the mornin’. The lake is comin’ up from all the rain we’ve been gettin’.

Most of the bass have been blowin’ up on buzz baits, frogs, and noisy topwater baits, and you can also catch’em on shiners.

I hope to see ya soon on the water.

Tip of the week: It’s almost speckled perch time!!

SAVE A FEW AND GOOD LUCK!
