Cold fronts keep fish from bitin’

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

We finally got some much-needed rain last week and we are goin’ to get some more this week. The cold front we had last week really dropped the water temperature. Rick and I noticed it on Saturday while fishin’ the Butler Chain.

The bite was off and they only wanted small plastic worms. We only caught a few small bass that Rick calls guppies. Anyway, we had a good time on the water even if we didn’t load the boat. We did see a lot of schoolin’ bass and lots of baitfish. The wind was blowin’ pretty good so that also slowed the fishin’ down as well.

We are approachin’ the full moon on Saturday, January 23, so the fishin’ should improve before and after the full moon. It all depends on the weather, but, as they say, a bad day fishin’ is better than a good day at work.

The specks should be gettin’ ready to do their thing. Folks have been catchin’ some specks in Lake Monroe and Lake Harney. You can also catch some specks in the Kissimmee Chain and the Harris Chain. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on jigs tipped with a minner. You can drift the open water until you can locate ‘em, or try fishin’ submerged grass beds.

The bass are bitin’ on shiners and plastic worms. Also try a slow-sinkin’ Senko-type bait along the shoreline grass and make sure you slow down a little. If that doesn’t work, try the submerged hydrilla and eel grass beds just off the shore line. If you have good water depth, try a slow-rollin’ spinner-bait or a swim-bait across the top of the grass. You need to cover a lot of water until you find those bass that want to bite.

Folks are catchin’ some bass and some specks in the St. Johns River. Folks are fishin’ with jigs tipped with a minner for specks. You will also catch some bass on shiners and plastic worms. Make sure you are lookin’ for the bait-pods up and down the river. You usually find the bass feedin’ on the bait-pods early and late in the day. Also, the shad fishin’ should pick up this week, with the full moon on Saturday.

Well, y’all have a good week, and take the family fishin’. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: full moon.

Save a few and good luck!
