Central Florida Prep’s first high school basketball game was a night of firsts for the Mariners, who opened their inaugural season at home Tuesday against the Apopka Christian Academy Bisons.

Apopka Christian Academy (ACA) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Aaron Lu made the first basket in Mariners history with a putback layup.
ACA’s center added free throws before the Bisons scored twice in transition to take control. Central Florida Prep’s 2-3 zone helped slow the offense, but ACA carried a 10-2 lead into the second quarter.
After another ACA free throw, Christian Pedro connected on a midrange jumper. Croix Nelthropp followed with a deep 3-pointer, marking the first three in school history. ACA answered with a midrange shot to make it 13-7 with five minutes remaining in the half.
The Bisons held a 17-7 advantage at halftime.
Jayden Knight scored his first two points in the third quarter, while Lu, Pedro and Nelthropp each added baskets. Knight knocked down a 3-pointer in the fourth, and Isaac Powell scored his first two points of the season as the Mariners continued to build their foundation.
ACA went on to win 44-20.
Despite the result, Central Florida Prep coach Mark Washington said his team showed resilience under difficult circumstances. The Mariners entered the game with their leading player sidelined by injury and only three official practices completed, with a roster made up of first-time players.

“Under the circumstances I feel the team showed a lot of heart and grit to stick with it through the ups and downs,” Washington said.
Washington said he reminded the players that mistakes were part of the process and that they did not need to put additional pressure on themselves.
“As long as they continuously display the ‘3 E’s’ of energy, effort and execution the results will come in due time,” Washington said.
