An Apopka man is accused of fatally shooting a Good Samaritan who intervened in a fight following a vehicle crash Tuesday morning, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and an arrest warrant affidavit. 

Raul Lionel Vazquez, 26, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder with a firearm in the death of Daryl Alexander Hill, 56. Vazquez admitted to investigators that he fired the shotgun that struck Hill but said Hill had attacked him, according to the affidavit. 

Deputies responded at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads after receiving a report of a man and woman physically fighting inside a vehicle that eventually crashed, according to OCSO. 

When deputies arrived, they found Vazquez and Kaidy Honaker near a heavily damaged white Chevrolet Silverado and Hill lying on his stomach on the sidewalk with a suspected gunshot wound, according to an affidavit filed by OCSO homicide detective Christopher Gilberti. 

Orange County Fire Rescue transported Hill to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.  

One witness told investigators that Vazquez and Honaker were arguing near the pickup after the crash when Hill, who had been riding a bicycle, approached and intervened between them. 

Vazquez and Hill began fighting and fell into nearby bushes, and Honaker subsequently became involved, according to one witness cited in the affidavit. 

After they emerged from the bushes, the witness said Vazquez retrieved something from the pickup while Hill ran away with his hands raised and yelled, “Help.” The witness then heard what was believed to be a gunshot. 

Another witness gave investigators a similar account, saying Hill ran from Vazquez with his hands raised and called for help. The witness said Vazquez retrieved a firearm from the pickup and fired once as Hill was running away, according to the affidavit. 

During an interview with investigators, Vazquez said an unknown man had attacked him for an unknown reason following the crash and was getting the better of him during their fight. Vazquez told investigators he had about six years of mixed martial arts and wrestling training. 

The affidavit states Vazquez provided multiple accounts of the incident but acknowledged firing the shotgun at Hill. Investigators said witness accounts indicated Hill was unarmed and was not a threat to Vazquez when he was shot. 

“Mr. Hill was simply trying to help someone who appeared to be in distress when he was shot,” OCSO said in an email to The Apopka Chief. 

A warrant signed Aug. 11 by Circuit Judge Laura Shaffer set no bond on the second-degree murder with a firearm charge. 

The homicide affidavit also states that Vazquez was already out on bond in an unrelated aggravated assault with a deadly weapon case investigated by the Apopka Police Department. The case stems from a 2025 arrest. 

Vazquez was booked into the Orange County Jail on Tuesday. 

A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established to support Hill’s wife, Suzy, and their 10-year-old daughter. As of Wednesday evening, the fundraiser had raised $18,128 toward a $50,000 goal from 194 donations.

The fundraiser, organized by Camil Reyes, states that the money will help the family with funeral and memorial expenses, immediate needs and other expenses following Hill’s death.

“Daryl lost his life while trying to help someone in need — a reflection of the kind of person he was and the heart he had for others,” the fundraiser states. “His life was taken far too soon, leaving behind his beloved wife, Suzy, and their 10-year-old daughter, who are now facing an unimaginable loss.”
