Weather affects how fishin’ goes in lakes, rivers in Central Florida

I hope you had a great weekend and you got a chance to do some fishin’. The weather a couple of weekends ago was awful but last weekend, lots of folks got on the water, catchin’ some specks and some bass.

The weather seems to have settled down just a bit and the fishin’ should be pickin’ up in most of the lakes and the chains of lakes in our area.

The speck fishin’ is pickin’ up in Lake Monroe, Lake Harney, and Lake Griffin. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on jigs tipped with a minner. You will do best by trollin’ or driftin’ the lake with your jigs at different depths. Once the specks start bitin’ your jig and minner, you can set all your jigs at the same depth. That way you will catch more specks because you got your jigs in the strike zone.

The Kissimmee Chain and the St. Johns River have been good for specks as well. Most folks are driftin’ over the grass beds with jigs tipped with a minner.

You will find more shad in the St. Johns River as we get closer to the full moon at the end of the month.

The bass should be gettin’ better each week also. Folks are catchin’ some bass in most of the chains and lakes in our area. The bass fishin’ on the Butler Chain has been pickin’ up since the bad storms of last week. Most of the bass are bein’ caught on shiners and slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits.

You can catch some bass in the Kissimmee Chain on spinner-baits and swim-baits fished around the submerged hydrilla and eel-grass beds.

The Harris Chain has been a good spot to catch some bass as of late. Most of the bass are bein’ caught in Lake Harris and Lake Eustis on shiners and plastic worms and spinner-baits.

Rick and I got a chance to go fishin’ last Saturday. We fished John’s Lake where we caught and released 14 bass up to 5 lbs. each. We checked to see if the bass were on the beds and it looks like they were on the beds on the last full moon. We found some beds that had been started but I believe the bass pulled off the beds with last week’s cold weather. I was fortunate to catch a nice bass and it looked like she had roe in her belly. I caught her in deeper water around submerged hydrilla grass on a plastic worm.

If the weather stays good, the female bass should move back on the beds this month. Rick has been fishin’ in the Harris Chain flippin’ the heavy cover and catchin’ some nice bass. He has caught and released several bass up to 6 lbs. each. One of the bass he caught looked like she was ready to go on the beds. Since Rick retired, he is enjoyin’ his time on the water.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope you get a chance to do some fishin’ this week or the upcom-in’ weekend. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: go fishin’.

Save a few and good luck!
