Warmer weather will get the bass to bitin’ in lakes and rivers in Central Florida

Hello Folks,

I can’t believe that as I’m writtin’ my article for this week, it’s 85 degrees outside. Some nice warm weather rolled into town and it’s given us a little break from the cold. The warm weather will warm up the water temps in the lakes and the bass should be goin’ on the beds to spawn. We have a new moon this week so I’m sure some bed activity will be happenin’ over the weekend.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that the specks are bitin’ really good in Lake Monroe, Lake Jesup, and Lake Harney. Kyle reports that most of the local lakes are producin’ some nice stringers of specks, too. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on minners and jigs tipped with a minner. Some of the best colors for jigs have been pink and white, green and yellow, white, and blue-chartreuse. So, get some jigs and a bucket of minners and take the family and go fishin’. Catchin a bunch of specks and eatin’ ’em for supper along with some grits and hushpuppies is the only way to go.

Kyle reports that the bass are bitin’ again and this could be a great weekend to go fishin’. They had a big bass tournament held on the Harris Chain last week and the biggest bass for the tournament was a 9.99-pounder. There were a lot of big bass weighed in over the course of three days.

The bass fishin’ on the Butler Chain has been a numbers game but I’m sure with the warmer water temps, you will see some bass movin’ into shallow water to spawn as well.

FLW held a bass tournament on the Kissimmee Chain last weekend and it took 66.10 lbs. to win the title. Bryan Schmitt was the winner of the tournament so congrats to Bryan on a great win on West.

Mark at Big Toho Bait and Tackle reports that the bass fishin’ has been good throughout the chain. Mark also wanted me to let everyone know that they are sprayin’ the north end of West Lake for hydrilla, so if you want to fish West Lake this weekend, you need to go fish the southern end of the lake or some of the other lakes in the chain.

Most of the anglers who fished the FLW Toyota Series tournament last weekend caught most of their bass on Rat-L-Traps, Swim-Jigs, and by draggin’ a worm through the hydrilla and eel-grass beds throughout out the chain. Some of the anglers like Bobby Bakewell fished the off-shore hydrilla mats. Bobby was usin’ a Zoom Magnum ultravibe Speed worm in the mornin’ and then switch over to a vibratin’ custom jig made here by B&B jigs.

Mark reports that six of the top ten anglers fished in West Lake and the other four anglers fished in Lake Kissimmee. There were two big bass weighed in durin’ the tournament. Samuel Whitmire caught an 11.11 pounder on day one of the tournament and Jared McMillan caught a 9.13 pounder on the second day of the tournament.

With all that said, I’m sure it’s gonna be a good weekend to some fishin’ if we don’t get rained out. Well, that’s it for this week. I hope to see you on the water real soon.

Tip of the week: new moon.

Save a few and good luck!
