This weekend’s weather should be good

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

I hope everyone had a great week and you are looking forward to a great weekend. Rick and I were goin’ fishin’ on Saturday and we got rained out so hopefully we can go this Saturday. Rick did go fishin’ this past Monday on the Harris Chain and caught and released eight bass up to 6 lbs. each. He caught all of his bass flippin’. With that said, it’s supposed to be a great weekend, so here’s hopin’ for a good weekend of fishin’.

The specks are still bitin’ in most of the lakes and chains in our area. But you need to hurry because the speck season is just about over. The bluegills and shellcrackers are gonna start bitin’ real soon. Some folks are catchin’ a few right now on red worms, and crickets.

The bass fishin’ has been good in most of the lakes in our area. Folks are catchin’ some big bass on shiners. If you go to the Butler Chain, try free-linin’ shiners out the back of the boat for some steady action. If you don’t want to use shiners, try fishin’ with a spinner-bait, swim-bait, or a plastic worm. You can also catch some bass at first light on top-water baits, plastic frogs and toads. You will find the bass hangin’ around the cover feedin’ on the bait-fish early in the mornin’. Once the sun gets up, you will need to move to deeper water and fish the submerged hydrilla and eel-grass beds. The best baits have been slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits, or shallow-runnin’ crankbaits. If the grass beds are just off the bottom, try fishin’ a lipless crankbait like a Rat-L-Trap over the top of the grass. You can also try fishin’ a swim-bait around the grass as well.

Over on the St. Johns River, folks are catchin’ some bass around the bait-pods movin’ up and down the river. If you see the bass bustin’ on the bait-pods, try fishin’ a noisy top-water bait, like a Devils Horse or a lipless crankbait. Once they quit schoolin’, try a plastic worm or a Carolina-rigged plastic worm.

The Kissimmee Chain has been a good spot to catch some bass. An angler friend of mine has been catchin’ some nice bass in West Lake on speed worms. He told me that you need to fish ‘em around lily pads and hydrilla beds. You can also fish ‘em over the grass-beds along the shoreline.

I hope we have a great weekend for fishin’ and I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: go fishin’. Save a few and good luck!
