Spring starts this weekend and fishin’ is doing very well

Hello Folks,

Well, we are just a few days away from springtime in Florida. Springtime starts this Sunday on March 20. We are already in daylight saving time which means more hours to fish. We can start gettin’ in some fishin’ after work which is a good thing.

The fishin’ is doin’ good right now in most of the chains and lakes in our area. Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that if you want to catch some specks, you need to hurry up and go. The speck bite is slowin’ down now that the water is warmin’ up. You can still catch a few specks on minners, but they are definitely not bitin’ like they were over the winter. Some folks fish for ‘em all year long, but they will move to deeper water during the summer months.

The bass fishin’ has been pretty good in most of the lakes in our area. MFL is holdin’ a tournament on the Harris Chain this week. The guys who are fishin’ it are catchin’ some nice stringers of bass and a few big ‘uns. They are catchin’ bass in a variety of ways. Some guys are flippin’ the canals, flippin’ the Kissimmee grass, and some guys are fishin’ offshore shell-beds and brush piles. The biggest bass of the tournament was caught by Randall Tharp. She weighed 9 lbs. 7 ozs. So the fishin’ on the Harris Chain is doin’ pretty good right now.

Just as a reminder, FWC is offering a Spring Aboard boater education class. Lots of folks will be gettin’ on the water this summer including recreational boats with water skiers, and tubers. Any boaters that were born after January 1, 1988, are required to complete and pass a boater safety education course. Taking a boater safety class will help to prevent boating accidents on the water. You can take an online course, if you want to, by going to MyFWC.com/boating. You need to click on “Boating Safety and Education” and you are good to go.

Rick and his brothers-in-law Carl and Greg finished up their week of fishin’ last week. They finished up their last day on the Butler Chain. They only got to fish a few hours due to time constraints, but they were able to catch and release 20 bass. Most of their bass were caught on plastic worms.

If you want to catch a lot of bass you might want to give the Butler Chain a try next week. Congrats to Kyle on his third-place finish on his bass club’s classic. The bass club is The West Orange Bass Anglers who held their classic on Lake Okeechobee last weekend. It was a two-day event and lots of bass were caught durin’ the tournament. It did take a two-day stringer of 30lbs. to win the event.

I would have to say if you want to catch some bass you need to get on the water and go fishin’ before summer gets here. I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: go fishin’

Save a few and good luck!
