Specks are movin’ to deeper water

Hello Folks,

The last few days have been so nice with it bein’ cool in the mornin’ and in the 80s durin’ the day. I just wish it would be like that all summer. If you want to catch some specks before summer gets here and before the specks get into their summer pattern, you need to go soon.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that the folks in his area are reportin’ that the speck bite has slowed down. You can still catch ’em on minners but they will be movin’ to deeper water for the summer. Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup have been the best lakes to catch a few specks.

Kyle also reports that the bass fishin’ has been good to very good in most of the chains. You still have a few bass goin’ on the beds and some that have already spawned.

The bass fishin’ on the Harris Chain has been pretty good. It’s still takin’ around 20 pounds of bass to win a tournament on the chain. Rick and I fished the Harris Chain last week and we caught eight bass up to 2.5 pounds each.

I fished there Monday of this week and caught only two bass but they
were around three pounds each. We caught most of our bass on plastic worms, fishin’ around the submerged hydrilla clumps and eel-grass.

Kyle fished his bass club’s tournament this past weekend on the Harris Chain and it took more than 22 pounds to win his club’s tournament. The biggest bass of the tournament was a little more than six pounds, so folks are still catchin’ some nice bass and nice stringers in the Harris Chain.

I mentioned last week that Major League Fishing was holding its tournament on the Harris Chain. Congrats to Tampa Bay’s own Christian Greico for winning the tournament on the Harris Chain. You might remember Christian from last year. He was the gentleman who caught “Jim Thomas,” that big bass out of Lake Apopka last year. It was a 9 lb. 12 oz. bass that was tagged by the FWC durin’ the Friends of Lake Apopka Fish Challenge. Well, on the final day of the tournament this year, Christian decided to fish Lake Apopka. The bass that he had caught for the first three days of the tournament were on shell-beds in Lake Harris. Christian knew he couldn’t win in those type of areas.

Christian made the decision to fish Lake Apopka on the final day and he weighed in a five-bass limit that weighed a total of 18 lbs. 5 oz. He caught all of his bass in Lake Apopka flippin’ heavy cover with a jig. The main reason I’m reportin’ these results is to give a shout out to the hundreds of people who have been involved in the restoration of Lake Apopka.

The FWC and the Friends of Lake Apopka and the hundreds of volunteers who have helped with this effort of restoring Lake Apopka. It’s great to see their results of their hard work, comin’ full circle. Hopefully, all the hard work will continue to pay off for our children and grandchildren who want to fish Lake Apopka.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope y’all have a great week and I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: Last chance for specks.

Save a few and good luck!
