Specks are bitin’ in the cooler weather

Hello Folks,

I went bass fishin’ on Monday and didn’t even break a sweat. The weather is great and the fishin’ is good to OK to it’s kinda slow. The one thing that isn’t slow is the specks.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that folks are catchin’ lots of specks in Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. The specks are bitin’ so good in Lake Monroe that some folks are catchin’ a few specks off the seawall in downtown Sanford. The specks are still bitin’ under the State Road 417 bridge in Lake Jesup. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on jigs, minners, and jigs tipped with a minner. A few folks are usin’ grass shrimp to catch some specks, too. The weather is great, and the specks are bitin’ so get a bucket of minners, few jigs, and go catch some specks. Also, Kyle reports that a few strippers are bein’ caught off the seawall as well.

My neighbor, John, and his nephew, Chet, are fishin’ for specks in Lake Monroe. They fished Lake Monroe last week and caught 30 nice specks. They only keep the bigger ones and they return the little ones back to the water to grow up for next season.

The bass fishin’ is, well, let’s just say some folks are really catchin’ some nice bass. The others of us are not catchin’ ’em as well. There has been a couple of tournaments held on the Harris Chain and it’s taken anywhere from 21 pounds to 30 pounds for five bass to win to those tournaments.

Kyle fished Lake Dora last week and he caught eight bass. I fished there on Monday and caught two bass on a half-day’s fishin’. Another angler fished Lake Dora with me and he caught eight bass. I’m usin’ the wrong lure or I’m not in the right spot when the bass are bitin’.

Rick and his brother-in-law, Carl, fished John’s Lake on Monday and they only caught four bass themselves. Kyle fished John’s Lake last week and caught 12 bass on a variety of baits. He reports that most of his bass were caught on top-water baits.

The bass are still bit-
in’ on the Butler Chain. Most folks are catchin’ numbers of bass but not too many big bass. The bass have been feedin’ along the shoreline cover and you need to keep a watch out for some bass to be bustin’ on the bait pods, throughout the chain.

Also, I wanted to mention that the water temperatures are com-
in’ down as well. The water temperature in Lake Dora on Monday was around 67 degrees. I confirmed it with another angler who was loadin’ his boat. He reported to me that the water temperature throughout the lake was around 67 degrees to 68 degrees.

We have a full moon on Friday of this week, so with the cooler water and a full moon, the bass fishin’ should improve greatly. The bass will be a little more aggressive now that the water is coolin’ down.

Well, I hope you get a chance to do some fishin’ this week. I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: specks are bitin’.

Save a few and good luck!
