More boat ramps are beginning to be re-opened after storms

Hello Folks,

I hope you have recovered from your Thanksgivin’ feast and you are ready to go fishin’. I did some checkin’ this week to see if any boat ramps were open or closed. The boat ramp on Lake Monroe in downtown Sanford is open. They are askin’ everyone to please be careful while you are on the water. I don’t have any reports on the fishin’ in Lake Monroe but it’s great news that you can now go fishin’ there.

Lake Harney and Lake Jesup boat ramps are still closed. The ramp at the Interstate 4 bridge and the park across the river in Debary are still closed as of earlier this week. All the ramps that Seminole County owns are still closed.

You can still fish the Harris Chain of Lakes and all their ramps are open as far as I know. The ramp at Big Toho Marina is open and the fishin’ has been pretty good for the past two weeks. Most of the bass are bein’ caught on shiners.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that a few folks are gettin’ some minners and fishin’ for specks in Lake Monroe. So, hopefully, the water is receding in the St. Johns River and that will open some more ramps real soon. We will be comin’ into speckled perch time real soon so, hopefully, more ramps will open to our fishermen.

I had a chance to do some fishin, over the holidays with my grandson, Brett, and his buddy, Josh. We went up to the Harris Chain but it was so foggy we couldn’t run around much and fish some different spots. We fished only a couple of hours because the boys had to get back to put up Christmas lights at the house. We didn’t do very well but on the same day, they held an annual Black Friday tournament on the Harris Chain. There were 96 boats in the tournament and the team of Bobby Bakewell and his dad, Robert Bakewell, won the tournament. They weighed in five bass that hit the scales at 36.67 lbs. They also won big bass with a bass that weighed in at 10.21 lbs. Their sack of fish included bass that weighed 10 pounds, 9 pounders, 7 pounds, and two that weighed 5 pounds each. Congrats, guys, on a great win. And to top things off, Bobby went fishin’ on Thanksgivin’ day and caught his personal best bass that hit the scales at 11.27 lbs. I would have to say that Bobby was givin’ his thanks for such a great weekend.

You can still fish the Maitland Chain and a few folks are gettin’ on the water and catchin’ a few bass on shiners freelinin’ the shiners over the submerged hydrilla beds. I also checked on the boat ramp on the Butler Chain at R.D. Keene Park and that ramp is still closed as of earlier this week.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope you have a great week and that you get a chance to do some fishin’.

Tip of the week: bass are bitin’.

Save a few and good luck!
