Despite wind, our weather has been great

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

I hope everyone is enjoyin’ this great weather we have been havin’. Yes, it’s a little windy at times but the fishin’ has been good in most of the chains and lakes in our area.

Folks are gettin’ on the water and catchin’ plenty of bluegills and shellcrackers. All you need is a bucket of red worms or some crickets. You will find the panfish around lily pads, docks, laydowns, or beddin’ out in open water around the submerged hydrilla and eel grass beds. I have mentioned it before but if you can smell ‘em or see a slick on top of the water, that’s usually a good spot to start.

The full moon is today, Friday, April 22, so the bluegills and shellcrackers will be on the beds and they should be bitin’ this weekend. So get the family and let’s go fishin’.

The bass fishin’ has been good in most of the lakes and chains in our area. I got reports this week that the Harris Chain has been a little slow, but with the full moon this week, it should pick back up. Folks are catchin’ some nice bass on the Kissimmee Chain.

You will do best with shiners or soft plastic baits. You need to fish the shiners around the cover and let the shiner swim up under the mats or shoreline cover. If you can find some hyacinths blown up near some grass or reeds, that would be a good spot to try. Those big bass like to get under the mats and wait for baitfish so they can attack the shiner.

If you want to fish artificials, try plastic worms or slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits. You can also try the sparse cover with plastic toads and frogs. Also, try fishin’ a spinner-bait in those areas as well. If the wind isn’t too bad, try fishin’ the submerged hydrilla and eel grass beds for bass, too.

Rick and I didn’t get out this past weekend to fish, so hopefully we can this weekend. Rick did go fishin’ durin’ the week and had a good day on the water. He caught most of his bass on plastic worms and slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits. He caught 10 bass that included a 4-pounder and a 6-pounder. I would say that’s a good day on the water. Again, good luck this weekend and get the family and go fishin’.

See ya next week.

Tip of the week: full moon.

Save a few and good luck!
