Cold front after New Year’s Day didn’t bother fishin’

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

Welcome to 2016. I hope everyone had a Happy New Year, and you are enjoyin’ the cooler weather we have been havin’. I wish we could have had some of this cooler weather over the holidays, don’t you?

Well, the fishin’ has been pretty good even after the cold front moved into town. Folks are gettin’ on the water and catchin’ plenty of specks in most of the lakes in our area. Lake Monroe is still the top lake in our area for specks. Driftin’ open water by crossin’ back and forth over the boat channels throughout the lake is the best way to catch the specks. Jigs tipped with a minner are still the best bait to use. Lake Woodruff, on the other end of the St. Johns River, has been real good for specks and some real nice bass are bein’ caught as well. Most of the bass are bein’ caught on shiners and swim-baits.

The Kissimmee Chain was good for bass before the cold front came to town, and in a couple of days, once the weather settles down, the bass fishin’ should pick back up, too. The specks are still bitin’ in West Lake and Lake Kissimmee. You will do best by driftin’ open water with jigs tipped with a minner.

Most of the bass are bein’ caught on shiners and slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits. You might try fishin’ with plastic toads or frogs first thing in the mornin’ and catch a few bass feedin’ at first light.

Folks were catchin’ some bass and a few specks in John’s Lake this past weekend. Rick and I caught and released 15 while the cold front was movin’ into our area Saturday mornin’. We caught most of our bass on plastic worms. We found most of the bass on the edge of the grass or out just off the shoreline in the hydrilla beds. We talked to some speck fishermen and they weren’t catchin’ very many specks. The specks should start bitin’ by the weekend after the weather gets right.

Rick and his grandson Owen went fishin’ last Monday on the Butler Chain. They caught and released 15 bass up to 2 lbs. each. I told Rick that was pretty doggone good since we had cold weather on Monday and blue-bird skies all day. They caught most of their bass on plastic worms along the grass-line and out in the hydrilla beds just off the points of the lake. Watermelon seed and watermelon pepper were the best colors to use.

We won’t have a full moon until January 23. The fishin’ should pick up as we go into the month, unless we get a really strong cold front move into town.

Well, I hope you have a great week, and you get a chance to do some fishin’. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: go fishin’ Save a few and good luck!
