Crews recovered a body Monday evening near Wekiva Island, and the person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to WFTV 9.The Seminole County Fire Department told The Apopka Chief that “witnesses advised a male went under the water and never resurfaced.”
In a statement to the Chief, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. in the Wekiva River and was likely an accidental drowning. The office has determined there were “no suspicious circumstances” and has not discovered any indication of alligator involvement.
According to WFTV 9, the person’s identity has not been released. A GoFundMe launched on Tuesday evening is currently asking for $11,000 to bring the body of Rivaldo Reyes back to Honduras. The fundraiser says Reyes drowned in the Wekiva River Monday evening. As of press time, The Apopka Chief had not independently confirmed whether Reyes was the person recovered from the river.
“On September 28th, unfortunately, Rivaldo, originally from Honduras, departed this world under unexpected circumstances,” said the GoFundMe description, translated into English from Spanish. “We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your prayers and solidarity with our family during this difficult time. With the hope of bringing Rivaldo’s body back to Honduras so his family and loved ones can say their final goodbyes in his homeland, we are raising funds for this purpose.”
As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe had received 46 donations, totaling $4,365.
The investigation is ongoing.
