Apopka’s senior night came with a winning streak to celebrate, four seniors to honor and a family connection on the opposing sideline.

The Blue Darters swept Wekiva 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 at Joe A. Sterling Gymnasium, extending their winning streak to eight matches and improving to 11-4 with two matches remaining in the regular season.

But the night was about more than the result. Apopka honored setters Taylor Cain and Emily Durham, outside hitter Lillian Phillips and libero Anais Ruiz. The night also featured Blue Darters coach Brian Mater facing his daughter, Avianna Mater, who plays for Wekiva.

Cain helped lead the way with five kills, eight aces and 15 assists, while Phillips finished with a team-high eight kills and two aces. Durham added three kills and 11 assists, and Ruiz contributed three aces and two assists.

For Phillips, the night brought a mixture of nerves, excitement and appreciation for the people who came to watch.

“Honestly, I was actually really nervous because I played a different position than what I usually play,” Phillips said. “So I was really nervous going into it, like, it’s my senior night and I really want to play good. I have a whole neighborhood over there in the stands for me.”

Phillips said having her family in attendance made the occasion especially meaningful, as they are not always able to make it to her games. She also reflected on the relationships she has built with her teammates after spending nearly all four years of high school on varsity and playing club volleyball with many of them.

“I really wanted to show them, like, I love them and I really put my heart into this team and game,” Phillips said.

The Blue Darters showed that commitment throughout the opening set, overcoming an early deficit before taking control.

Wekiva built a 5-1 lead behind kills from Elyanna Sanchez and a block from Ginia Reese. But Ruiz helped swing the momentum with three consecutive aces, bringing Apopka within a point before the Blue Darters took a 7-6 lead.

Ruiz then set up Phillips for a kill, and Apopka continued to build its advantage. The Blue Darters eventually forced a Wekiva timeout at 13-8.

The Mustangs responded with Isabella Espada setting Isabella Mancilla for a cross-court kill before Avianna Mater recorded an ace to cut the deficit to 15-12.

Espada later served an ace to bring Wekiva within one, but Apopka answered. Cain set Kierra Taylor for a kill, then delivered an ace to help push the lead to 23-19. Phillips closed the set with an ace for a 25-20 win.

Apopka carried that momentum into the second set, jumping ahead 4-1 as Wekiva struggled with errors.

Cain took over from the service line, recording three consecutive aces to extend the lead to 10-5. Phillips followed with a kill past two Mustangs defenders, forcing a timeout with Apopka ahead 12-5.

Wekiva briefly slowed the run with a kill from Mater, but the Blue Darters maintained control. Marie Hughes delivered a kill during a long rally, and Phillips continued to find openings in the Mustangs’ defense.

Cain added another ace, her sixth of the match at that point, before Apopka closed out the set 25-15.

The third set provided a more competitive finish.

Wekiva opened with a 2-0 lead, but Apopka quickly responded. The teams traded points before Mancilla served an ace to give the Mustangs an 8-7 advantage.

Mater continued to produce at the net, recording kills from the left side and middle as Wekiva stayed within reach. She finished with 10 kills and two aces to lead the Mustangs.

Apopka regained control. Sophomore Violet Venning delivered back-to-back aces, while Cain, Durham and Hughes contributed kills to help the Blue Darters establish an 18-14 lead.

Phillips added a powerful kill, and Durham continued to find openings with well-placed tips. Apopka held a 22-20 advantage after a pair of blocks from Sanchez and Reese helped Wekiva’s attack.

Cain set Durham for a kill to move Apopka closer to the finish, and Hughes delivered an ace to seal the 25-21 victory.

While the win extended Apopka’s streak, Ruiz said the team’s improvement and connection have made this season particularly meaningful.

“I feel like this team has improved every single year, and I feel like this year has just meant the most to me, ’cause these girls, we treat each other like family,” Ruiz said.

Ruiz has been recognized by the coaching staff for her leadership, regularly encouraging younger players throughout matches.

“Being a leader and stepping up for all the girls who are scared to have a voice or scared to just step up, I think it’s really good to just be there for everyone and be a family together,” Ruiz said.

Durham has embraced a similar role with a younger roster.

“It feels really good to lead underclassmen,” Durham said. “There is a lot of younger players on the team this year, and I really enjoy getting to play with them and kind of be a role model during such a great season.”

Cain said she had anticipated senior night for a long time and was excited to play in front of family and friends who do not usually attend her matches.

“I’ve been anticipating this night for so long, and for it to actually be happening was crazy,” Cain said. “The years here flew by. I was really nervous but wanted to show out for all my family and friends that came, because they don’t usually come. Seeing them and being able to play well in front of them was good.”

For Mater, watching the four seniors develop over the past three seasons has made their final year together particularly special.

“It’s gonna be a really tough group to let go,” Mater said. “We started three years ago, coach Sarah and I, so we’ve got these girls when they were sophomores, so we’ve been able to watch them grow over the last three years.”

Mater said he hopes the lessons the seniors have learned extend well beyond volleyball.

“To watch, not only them develop as players, but women and women that can actually be some good leaders in the future is what I’m looking for,” Mater said. “I sent a text to Anais and just told her I can’t wait to see how you do in life. That’s probably the most important for me.”

With the regular season winding down, Apopka has two matches left to build on its best season in nearly a decade.

The Blue Darters host Edgewater at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, looking to extend their winning streak to nine matches.

Wekiva (6-9) faced the University Cougars (7-7) Wednesday at home and won a 5 set thriller 3-2.
