The Blue Darters opened the 2026 season Tuesday night on the road against Ocoee, and from the opening serve, Apopka controlled the match. The Blue Darters rolled to a 25-8 first-set victory, fought through a late Ocoee push in the second set and finished off the Knights 25-12 to sweep the season opener, 3-0.

It was a complete team effort for Apopka, with every player seeing the court and contributing to the victory.

“We have a team that these girls have played together,” Apopka coach Brian Mater said. “We’ve got some freshmen that are starting here. They fit in right away. You’d think that they’ve been playing with us for the last four years. They’re having fun. Everybody’s having fun. Honestly, it’s just a lot of great energy.”

Apopka came out firing in the opening set.

Marie Hughes opened with two booming kills before Kiana Napier added a kill off the top of the net to give the Blue Darters an early 3-0 advantage.

Laila White, making her varsity debut as a freshman middle blocker, quickly made her presence felt with a kill in the middle. Napier followed with another kill along the right side before White and Kierra Taylor added kills to push the lead to 8-2.

Senior Taylor Cain checked in and took over from the service line.

Cain delivered back-to-back aces before setting up Taylor for a kill and following it with another ace. Apopka led 13-3, forcing an Ocoee timeout.

The break did little to slow the Blue Darters.

Cain immediately returned with two more aces, extending the lead to 15-3. Ocoee finally answered with a kill, but Taylor responded with a spike through the middle.

Behind Anais Ruiz’s serve, Apopka continued to pile on points, including a kill from Cain that pushed the lead to 21-6. White and Napier added three more kills, giving Apopka a 25-8 win.

The second set proved to be the Knights’ best opportunity to make the match competitive.

Ocoee struck first, but Apopka quickly answered with two aces from Ruiz and took a 3-1 lead. Ocoee tied the set at 6-6, but the Blue Darters immediately found another gear.

White recorded a block and a kill before Hughes smashed a cross-court kill. Taylor then came flying across the net for a running block that helped trigger an Ocoee timeout with Apopka ahead 11-6.

Apopka continued its run after the timeout.

Freshman setter Kalissa Burske set up Hughes perfectly for one of her signature cross-court kills, and senior Lillian Phillips followed with back-to-back kills to make it 16-6.

After Ocoee finally ended the 10-point run, White continued her strong debut with another kill off the hands of a Knights defender.

Napier later checked back in and delivered a kill to make it 19-9, while Hughes added a solo kill off a volley as Apopka moved within two points of the set at 22-9.

Then Ocoee mounted a comeback.

The Knights scored six consecutive points, prompting coach Sarah Egbers to call timeout with Apopka’s lead trimmed to 22-15.

The timeout settled the Blue Darters, who answered with the next point. Victoria Polusmak added a big block to push Apopka to set point at 24-16.

Ocoee refused to go quietly, winning a lengthy rally at 24-16 that featured multiple blocks and big digs before taking three more points to cut the deficit to 24-19.

Apopka finally closed the door when senior setter Emily Durham set up Taylor for the final kill of the set, giving the Blue Darters a 25-19 win and a 2-0 advantage.

The third set belonged to Apopka from the start.

Napier opened the scoring with a kill and Cain added an ace as the Blue Darters jumped ahead 3-1. White added a solo kill to make it 7-3, and Napier struck again moments later.

Hughes found herself a free-ball kill before Cain set her up with a pass deep away from the net for another highlight-reel point. Apopka led 10-4.

The teams traded points until Napier smashed a kill and Cain caught Ocoee off guard with an unexpected dump over the net. Cain followed with another dump for a point, helping Apopka build an 18-10 lead.

Hughes added an ace before Cain set up Polusmak for a kill on the left side, making it 20-10.

Ocoee responded with three consecutive points, but Apopka quickly regained control. Cain set up White again before Polusmak went to the service line to close out the match.

Taylor delivered the final kill, giving Apopka a 25-18 third-set victory and the sweep.

Napier led the Blue Darters with 11 kills. Hughes and Taylor each added eight kills.

Cain was a dual threat throughout the match, finishing with four kills, six aces and 18 assists.

White turned in an impressive performance in her first varsity match, recording six kills, two blocks and an ace. As one of three underclassmen among juniors and seniors, she fought through the nerves and proved she belongs.

“It feels pretty nerve-racking, but overall it’s really exciting, especially when I score,” White said.

She said she hopes to build on the performance as the season continues.

Apopka also received strong play from its setters. Isabel Romero finished with nine assists, while Durham added seven and Burske had five.

For Mater, the numbers were only part of what made the victory impressive. The energy throughout the roster was most important.

That energy is not coming from one particular player, either.

“There’s not one leader,” Mater said. “They all lift each other as a pack and mesh really well.”

That chemistry was evident in the season opener, as every player stepped onto the court and recorded a statistical contribution.

Apopka also added Jonathan Gardon to the coaching staff this season as an assistant coach. Gardon, a theater teacher at Apopka, is a former Blue Darters volleyball player. He also has a family connection to the program, as coach Egbers graduated and played volleyball alongside his sister.

The Blue Darters look to carry their momentum into the home opener against Forest Lake Academy at 6 p.m. on Thursday night.
