Apopka lets 14-point lead slip away in loss to Ocoee

For nearly three quarters, Apopka appeared to have control of its rivalry matchup with Ocoee. 

Looking for their first win of the season, the Blue Darters built a 14-0 halftime lead behind a strong defensive performance and a pair of touchdowns. But the momentum quickly shifted after halftime, and Ocoee scored 23 unanswered points to rally for a 23-14 victory over Apopka on Friday night. 

It was a game in the hands of Apopka that was simply given away. 

“We gave the game away.” Head coach Marcus Neeson said after the game. “We don’t know how to win yet, we had the lead and let off the gas.” 

Apopka’s defense set the tone early, forcing Ocoee to punt on its opening possession after stopping the Knights on third-and-3 for a 2-yard loss.  

After a short possession, they pinned Ocoee deep and stopped them on another three-and-out. 

The Blue Darters took over at the Ocoee 42 and marched down the field. Kai Goodling connected with Johnson Navilssaint on a pass that moved Apopka inside the Ocoee 10. 

After a false-start penalty pushed Apopka back, Jalen Parmely helped move the ball closer to the goal line before Jakyvion Kemp finished the drive with a direct snap, fighting his way into the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown. 

The extra point gave Apopka a 7-0 lead with 1:57 remaining in the first quarter. 

The Blue Darters’ defense continued to frustrate Ocoee. Irish Ferrer made a strong play at the line of scrimmage, while David Wemberly and others helped force the Knights into another fourth-down situation. 

Early in the second quarter, Ferrer came up with another big play, forcing an incompletion on fourth-and-1 to give Apopka the ball. 

The Blue Darters’ defense continued to create opportunities, and Apopka repeatedly started drives on Ocoee’s side of the field. However, the offense struggled to turn those opportunities into points. 

With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Ocoee appeared poised to put together a scoring drive. The Knights moved into Apopka territory before Wemberly changed the game. 

Wemberly hawked an Ocoee pass in the middle of the field and raced 70 yards for a touchdown, outrunning the Knights to the end zone. The extra point pushed Apopka’s advantage to 14-0 with 1:31 remaining before halftime. 

Ocoee threatened to answer before the break, but Apopka’s defense held firm and forced another punt, sending the Blue Darters into halftime with a two-score lead. 

The third quarter, however, began to turn the game. 

Apopka moved the ball on its opening possession before Goodling’s pass was intercepted and returned for an Ocoee touchdown. The Knights’ score cut the deficit to 14-7. 

From there, both defenses controlled much of the action. Apopka’s defense repeatedly pinned Ocoee deep, aided by strong punts from Jacobo Trujillo. 

Trujillo consistently flipped the field for the Blue Darters, including punts that placed Ocoee at its own 10- and 4-yard lines. 

Apopka’s defense continued to make plays to keep the Knights from capitalizing. Jakendall Kemp blew up a play to stop a short down and distance, while Jayden Caban, Le’Melle Griffin and Kamron Medina made important stops through the next few stops. Medina chased down an Ocoee receiver deep in Apopka territory to prevent a potential touchdown. 

But Ocoee finally broke through late in the fourth quarter. 

With 7:29 remaining, the Knights connected on a deep touchdown pass to tie the game at 14. 

Apopka’s next possession quickly turned into trouble. A holding penalty put the Blue Darters in a first-and-20 situation before Goodling was sacked near the goal line. On the following play, Goodling was pressured while throwing from the end zone and was flagged for intentional grounding. 

Because the penalty occurred in the end zone, it resulted in a safety, giving Ocoee a 16-14 lead with 6:11 remaining. 

The Knights then took advantage of the late lead. After a series of runs and first downs winding the clock, Ocoee broke through a large hole on the left side and scored on a long rushing touchdown to extend its lead to 23-14. 

Apopka managed two first downs during the final minute, but the Blue Darters could not find the end zone before the clock expired. 

The loss was particularly difficult for Apopka after controlling the first half of the game. 

“We were solid in all phases and then started making small mental errors,” Apopka coach Marcus Neeson said. “Punter did a great job pinning them deep and flipping field position for us. We just got too comfortable and took our eyes off our keys on defense.” 

Neeson said Apopka’s offense was also moving the ball effectively before penalties and mistakes stalled its drives. 

“Offensively we were grinding them down with 5 yards a carry until we started with the small errors,” Neeson said. “Had a neutral zone infraction and a holding penalty that killed two drives. Hard to keep momentum with little mistakes like that.” 

The Blue Darters will now look to regroup on the road against Olympia next Friday.
