Apopka’s playoff hopes came to an end Friday night as the Blue Darters fell to Lake Mary 45-13 in their final Class 6A District 3 matchup of the season.

The Blue Darters (3-5) entered the matchup looking to build on a district win over Lake Brantley and keep their postseason hopes alive. Instead, Lake Mary controlled the game early, building a 31-7 halftime lead before triggering a running clock in the third quarter.

“I thought we were going to come out and compete,” Apopka coach Marcus Neeson said. “I thought we had a good week of preparation, but we kind of lacked the focus on Thursday, and it came back to bite us. This was not how I expected this game to go.”

Lake Mary wasted little time establishing control. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Rams marched down the field, converting a third-and-short opportunity with a 31-yard completion to reach the Apopka 1-yard line. Three-star quarterback Remy Jarman eventually punched the ball into the end zone to give Lake Mary a 7-0 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Apopka struggled to respond, going three-and-out on its opening possession. The Rams capitalized with another scoring drive, extending their lead to 14-0 with 2:57 left in the first quarter.

The Blue Darters found a spark on their next possession when quarterback Kai Goodling connected with Jakyvion Kemp for a 50-yard completion into Rams territory. However, a pass thrown to an out route on the left side was intercepted, ending the drive.

Lake Mary continued to take advantage of its opportunities, opening the second quarter with a touchdown pass to extend its lead to 21-0.

Apopka answered on its next possession. Kemp took a direct snap for a 16-yard gain before Goodling connected with Nyzier Collington on a long completion to move the Blue Darters near midfield. After working into the red zone, Goodling delivered a jump ball to Collington, who outleaped a defender for the touchdown. The extra point cut the deficit to 21-7 with 9:09 remaining in the first half.

Lake Mary responded with another scoring drive, using a 50-yard completion to reach the red zone before finding the end zone again. After the Blue Darters surrendered possession on a failed trick play behind the line of scrimmage, the Rams added a 47-yard field goal with 52 seconds left in the half to take a 31-7 advantage into the break.

Apopka’s attempt to build momentum after halftime was quickly derailed. A pass from Goodling was intercepted and returned for a touchdown, pushing the Rams’ lead to 38-7 with 11:34 remaining in the third quarter.

The Blue Darters briefly gained possession after Le’Melle Griffin tracked down a punt and recovered the ball when the Lake Mary returner struggled to field it. Apopka took over at its own 47-yard line but could not turn the opportunity into points.

A failed fake punt gave the ball back to Lake Mary, which scored on a 56-yard touchdown run down the right sideline. The extra point made it 45-7 with 5:07 remaining in the third quarter, triggering a running clock.

Despite the deficit, Apopka continued to compete in the fourth quarter. After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Blue Darters put together their final scoring drive behind completions from Goodling to Ceon Cotton, Jaylen Laster and Johnson Navilssaint.

Goodling extended the possession with a scramble before connecting with Collington, who made a defender miss near the goal line and finished the play with a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score at 45-13 with 2:40 remaining.

Lake Mary recovered Apopka’s ensuing onside kick attempt and ran out the clock to secure the victory, eliminating the Blue Darters from playoff contention.

With the Battle for the Mayor’s Cup remaining, Neeson said the focus shifts to preparing his seniors for their final opportunity to take the field together and reinforcing lessons that extend beyond football.

“It’s playing for pride,” Neeson said. “Football and playing a team sport, it’s a life lesson that we’re trying to teach these guys. It’s not just about the sport of football. It’s about teaching these young men to be great men.”

Neeson acknowledged that the result fell well short of expectations after a week of preparation. Rather than pointing to one specific issue, he said the team needed to improve across the board.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words because this was not how I was expecting this game to go,” Neeson said. “I can blame it on bad play calling. I can blame it on execution, but it was a total, whole across the board loss. We just got to get better. That’s what it boils down to.”

The Blue Darters will look to close their season on a stronger note, playing for pride and one final opportunity to finish the year together against crosstown rival Wekiva.
