After falling to Horizon earlier this season, the Blue Darters flipped the script when it mattered most, knocking off the Hawks, 5-3, on Tuesday to claim the Metro West title and advance to the Metro Conference Championship game.

Apopka (10-4) wasted no time setting the tone.
Shylah Pino ignited the offense in the bottom of the first, laying down a bunt single and immediately applying pressure on the basepaths. She stole second, then third, before Alicia Lopez drove a ball deep to bring her home. Moments later, Taylor Smith followed with another RBI hit to give the Blue Darters a quick 2-0 lead.
In the circle, Ava Millspaugh navigated early traffic, working around a walk in the first inning and striking out a batter to keep Horizon off the board.
The Hawks (10-5) threatened in the second, stringing together hits to put runners in scoring position. A groundout brought in a run, but Millspaugh limited the damage with a strikeout to preserve the lead.

Apopka answered in the bottom half of the inning.
After Alexia Hatcher was hit by a pitch and Millspaugh was walked, Victoria Shaw delivered a deep drive to center field that hit the fence, scoring Hatcher and extending the lead to 3-1. The Blue Darters had a chance to add more, but a double play at home plate cut the rally short.
Millspaugh continued to settle in through the third, mixing in strikeouts and weak contact to keep Horizon in check.
The game tightened in the fourth.
After a hit batter and an error put pressure on Apopka, Horizon loaded the bases and forced a pitching change. Mia Aeschilman entered in relief and the Hawks immediately capitalized with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2.
But Apopka’s defense delivered in a pivotal moment.
Pino got a cutoff from the outfield, then fired home from shortstop to catch a runner at the plate, where Smith applied the tag to stop the threat. Aeschilman followed with a comebacker and a groundout to escape the inning and keep Apopka in front.

“Those were absolutely huge plays,” MacWithey said. “We had two runners thrown out at the plate and that made a big difference in the game.”
Apopka added to its lead in the fifth behind more aggressive baserunning.
Pino ripped a triple down the right-field line, then perfectly timed her break to the plate on a groundout from Lopez, sliding in safely to make it 4-2. The Blue Darters threatened again with the bases loaded later in the inning, but were unable to capitalize.
Horizon stayed within striking distance.
In the sixth, the Hawks put together another rally, using a single and a groundout to bring in a run and cut the deficit to 4-3. But once again, Apopka’s defense limited the damage, highlighted by a leaping play from Lopez at third to record a key out.
The Blue Darters responded in the bottom half with an insurance run.
After Shaw reached and Pino was hit by a pitch, Lopez delivered again, lining a hit into shallow right field to score Shaw and push the lead to 5-3.
That set the stage for the final inning.

Millspaugh returned to the circle for the seventh and immediately got help from her defense as Ava Gonzalez snagged a line drive for the first out. Horizon followed with back-to-back singles to put the tying run on base, bringing the pressure squarely onto Apopka.
As MacWhithey stood up to approach the circle, Millspaugh waved him off, choosing to finish the inning herself.
Moments later, Horizon sent a ball into the outfield that looked destined to score a run, but Apopka came through again defensively. Sydney Bartkin charged in from center field, fielded the ball cleanly and fired a strike home, where Smith applied the tag for another crucial out at the plate.

The next batter grounded out to Lopez, sealing the 5-3 victory and sending Apopka into celebration.
“I think Mia could have stayed in, but she had that finger issue,” MacWithey said. “Ava wasn’t exactly at her best tonight, but she got the job done. That’s what matters.”
While the defense delivered in key moments, MacWithey noted there is still room for improvement offensively.
“We had a few strikeouts looking, and that’s typically what we don’t do,” he said. “You can’t get on base if you don’t swing the bat.”
Still, Apopka did enough in all phases to secure the Metro West crown while avenging its earlier loss to Horizon.
Now, the Blue Darters turn their attention to the next challenge.
They will face Boone on the road at 7pm on Thursday, with a chance to capture the Metro Conference Championship — and cement themselves as one of the top teams in the county.
“Now we have the chance to be the best in Orange County. That’s our goal,” MacWithey said. “We’ll lace them up again on Thursday.”
