Afternoon showers save us from July’s brutal weather

Hello Folks,

Well, hello summer. It’s July and summer time is here and boy, oh, boy, is it here in full force. We are havin’ some hot days and the good news is that we are gettin’ a few afternoon showers, too.

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend and, hopefully, you got in some boatin’ and fishin’ with the family. The fishin’ ain’t too bad but you need to go early in the mornin’ or late in the evenin’ to avoid the heat.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports the folks in their area are still catchin’ some specks in Lake Jesup. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on minners under the State Road 417 bridge. You can also catch some specks in the St. Johns River, too.

Folks are still catchin’ some bluegills and shellcrackers in Lake Jesup and Lake Monroe. You can catch a few panfish in the St. Johns River around the pads and the laydowns.

The bass fishin’ is still pretty good in most of the area’s lakes. The Butler Chain is still producin’ numbers of bass with a few nice ‘uns bein’ caught as well.

My neighbor, John, and his nephew, Chet, are fishin’ the Butler Chain and they are still catchin’ 25 to 30 bass per trip. They get there early and by 1 p.m., they are off the water and headin’ to the house.

The Harris Chain bass fishin’ is hit or miss. Some folks are catchin’ ’em and some folks aren’t doin’ so good. It’s been a little tough but, hey, a bad day on the water is still better than a good day at work. Right?

Folks are still catchin’ some bass in John’s Lake but they are goin’ early or late in the day up to dark-thirty, which is around 8:30 p.m. You can still catch some bass durin’ the day but when that sun gets up in the sky and the wind lays down, it gets pretty hot. Make sure you take along plenty of water and Gatorade so you can stay hydrated.

The second pink-tagged bass was caught in Newnans Lake. The bass was caught by R.J. Crawford. You can go to the TrophyCatch website and see his catch. You can also go look at the maps that will tell you where these pink-tagged bass were released. So, we know there still is a pink-tagged bass that hasn’t been caught that’s swimmin’ in John’s Lake. If you want to win some money and prizes, you need to get on the water and catch you a pink-tagged bass.

I wish I had some better news on the fishin’ but it’s summer time and you can still catch some fish, just be prepared for the hot weather. I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: early or late.

Save a few and good luck!
