Key Points
- The Wekiva Mustangs defeated Cypress Creek Bears 52-0 in their 2026 season opener after overcoming an early turnover.
- Senior quarterback Dominick Sanguine threw for 126 yards and scored three total touchdowns in the first half of the game.
The Wekiva Mustangs brushed off a weather delay and stampeded their way to a 52-0 route against the Cypress Creek Bears in the regular season opener Friday night at Mustang Field.
The big win, which came a week after Wekiva edged Taveres, 14-13, in a preseason matchup, got the Mustangs off to a 1-0 start on the 2026 season.
Before the game, head coach Ashton Watts said he wanted his team to focus on the little details and creating good habits.
“If we do that, no matter who we line up against, we should win,” he said. “We’re not focusing on our opponent, just continuing to focus on us.”
Wekiva got off to a wobbly start in the first two minutes of the game, including a dropped kickoff that created a turnover for the Bears. But the Mustangs quickly took back possession when senior linebacker Braylen Bouie recovered a fumble. That set up a second-and-goal rushing touchdown by quarterback Dominick Sanguine, leading to an early 7-0 lead for Wekiva.
From that point on, the Mustangs were in full control of the game. Coming off his heroic-like preseason game a week earlier, Sanguine stayed locked in throughout the contest. He threw for 126 passing yards and two touchdowns while running for a third score — all in the first half.
Senior running back Landon Jerome also pitched in with 36 first-half rushing yards and a touchdown, and senior receiver Bakary Manley hauled in 75 first-half receiving yards and a touchdown.

By the halftime whistle, the Mustangs headed to their locker room with a 38-0 score in their favor.

The huge lead triggered a running clock in the second half. With an ongoing clock and a suffocating Wekiva defense, the Cypress Creek was unable to find an offensive rhythm.
The Wekiva front seven, led by sophomore De’Andre Payne, freshman Nehemiah Middleton, and senior middle linebacker Jaylyn Noel, held the Bears’ running attack to just six yards for the remainder of the game.
“Last week we made mistakes, and we learned from those mistakes,” defensive coordinator Jerry Middleton said. “We carried the momentum from last week into this week, and because of that, we got better as a unit.”
While the defense was doing its job, Jerome continued with strong runs up the middle and finished with a second rushing touchdown.
With the score completely out of reach, some of the Wekiva reserve players also got involved. At the top of the fourth quarter, freshman quarterback Ty’Rance Cook completed a seam route pass to receiver Dominique Walker for Wekiva’s last score of the game, making it a 52-0 final.

Kicker Jochrist Exantus also converted three extra point attempts on the night to contribute to the scoring.
The Mustangs, coming off a 1-9 season in 2025, have already come a long way toward setting a new standard on the gridiron following last week’s preseason win over Tavares and the season-opening victory over Cypress Creek.
The Wekiva community is taking notice, too.
“The coaches are doing a phenomenal job,” said Wekiva Assistant Principal Vanessa Marshall. “I am very proud of these boys and the brotherhood they are starting to form. It seems that they are very disciplined.”
Next week, the Mustangs will travel to Lake Buena Vista (0-1) to take on the Vipers for their second game of the season — and a chance to double their win total from 2025.
