The Wekiva Mustangs dominated all three phases of the game as they started a three-week road trip with a 56-6 blowout of the Lake Buena Vista Vipers on Friday night.

Lake Buena Vista, a school entering its sixth year of existence, looked to redeem itself from last week’s 71-0 shutout loss, but it ran into an increasingly focused Wekiva team that is now 2-0 on the young season.

Wekiva started fast in the first quarter, marching down the field from its own 43-yard line with strong efforts from senior running back Ya’Terrius Jackson and a 30-yard dot thrown to receiver Dominique Walker from starting quarterback Dominick Sanguine. Wekiva workhorse Bakary Manley capped the opening drive with a 14-yard touchdown run up the left sideline.

“I’m always proud of their urgency,” head coach Ashton Watts said of the quick start. “We can’t take any opponent lightly, and we show that in our urgency.”

Wekiva kept the momentum after a special teams fumble recovery with 9:50 left in the first quarter. The turnover led to Sanguine’s 32-yard pass to Manley, which he followed with a 10-yard quarterback keeper into the end zone.

Wekiva capitalized on its second two-point conversion of the game to take a commanding 16-0 lead.

For the second week in a row, the defense showed grit and speed on the field, keeping the Vipers to -12 yards on the ground in the first quarter. Led once again by Wekiva’s front seven, the Vipers couldn’t find any breathing room to establish a rhythm on offense.

With a defense clicking on all cylinders, the offense had ample time on the field to showcase a balanced run and passing game. Jackson continued his dominance late in first quarter with a hard-fought 45-yard run up the middle. He finished the drive with a pitch to the left for a nine-yard touchdown run, putting Wekiva up 23-0.

The second quarter came with special teams heroics. At the 10:22 mark of the second quarter, senior wide receiver Avantae Scott fielded a punt and maneuvered his way to a 47-yard touchdown return.

Later in the quarter, Scott matched his first touchdown with a second punt return touchdown, this time covering 38 yards, putting the Mustangs up 36-0 with less than six minutes left in the half.

Near halftime, Sanguine hit Rashard Ricketts in stride for a 45-yard pass, which set up backup quarterback Ty’Rance Cook, who connected with sophomore Givonny Bufford for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The Mustangs entered the locker room with a well-balanced 43-0 score.

With a running clock in the second half, Wekiva continued to manhandle the Lake Buena Vista running game, holding the Vipers to negative yardage in their opening possession.

The Wekiva offense, utilizing the entirety of the bench, added more points when senior running back Landon Jerome took a bad snap and turned it into a 47-yard touchdown run up the sideline. Wekiva missed the field goal, which left the score at 49-0.

With the Lake Buena Vista staring at its second scoreless game in the face, starting quarterback Yusuf Hussain responded with a well-placed pass to running back Chris Figueroa, who turned it into a 71-yard score, the team’s first touchdown of the season.

Jackson capped off Wekiva’s remarkable night by promptly returning the ensuing kickoff to cap the scoring at 56-6.

Next week, Wekiva travels to Winter Garden to take on the 2-0 West Orange Warriors.
