Wekiva High band raising funds for new uniforms

The Wekiva High School band is aiming to raise $90,000 to replace its band uniforms, which were purchased when the school opened its doors 14 years ago.

Joshua Grossnicklaus, band director at Wekiva High School, introduced himself and gave details of the school’s fundraising efforts at the November 3 City Council meeting. At that time, the school has raised $10,000, Grossnicklaus said.

He showed the City Council a sample uniform, which he called “very nondescript.”

“I think they were ordered when they knew what the school was going to be called and what the colors were, that’s it; there was no mascot. They’re kind of falling apart,” he said.

The $90,000 goal was the 2019 quote the high school received for replacing the uniforms. The cost has gone up little since then, Grossnicklaus said.

The school is aiming to raise at least $45,000, with the WHS principal of Wekiva working to cover the rest of the cost.

WHS is expected to order 200 uniforms averaging about $500 each, with an updated modern design using an asymmetrical jacket, a uniform that prominently displays all of the school colors and includes large emblems of WHS Mustang mascot on the chest.

Music to My Mind, a nonprofit charity dedicated to music and education in Central Florida, is helping raise money for the new WHS uniforms. The nonprofit currently has a $3.5 million matching fund program drive.
