Key Points
As Apopka Blue Darter football enters the final phase of the 2026 season, now is a good time to reflect on the tremendous progress since our program literally fell apart in late May of 2025.
Apopka’s dramatic, last-second homecoming victory over heavily favored Lake Brantley illustrates just how far Apopka football has come since the catastrophic events of May 2025 when over 20 players defected from Apopka High School to various other schools, sparking then-head coach Jeff Rolson’s resignation and leaving Apopka football in tatters on the brink of the 2025 season, while facing arguably the toughest schedule in Florida.
As we have covered in this space previously, Blue Darter football faced that daunting schedule in 2025 with only one returning starter and a roster that was essentially the equivalent of a JV/freshman team.
Fast forward to Oct. 9, 2026, and we witnessed an Apopka team stocked with over 50 talented players defeat a heavily favored Lake Brantley team led by one of the most highly touted quarterbacks in Florida.
Over the course of Apopka’s dramatic come-from-behind last-second victory, coach Marcus Neeson’s Blue Darters made big plays in the passing game and running game, demonstrated a deep pool of talented receivers, solid quarterbacking, effective play on both lines, a blocked kick, a solid kicking game and special teams, a 2-point conversion and a gritty “bend but don’t break” defense to slow down one of Florida’s most high-powered passing attacks and emerge with a storybook victory.
An additional benefit is that the Lake Brantley game is a district game, which means Apopka is still in contention for a spot in the postseason.
And, on top of all that, the 2026 freshman team finished with an outstanding 5-1 record, at a time when many of our rival schools no longer even field a freshman team.
While I’m sure experts in the stands will still take to their keyboards with critiques, the view from this vantage point shows a program that has made monumental strides from the embers of 2025 with a full roster of capable players, many of them underclassmen, and an uncommon spirit of resilience and perseverance, which was forged while suffering some of the most devastating adversities any high school football team could endure.
While big games with defending state champion Lake Mary and the annual “Battle for the Mayor’s Cup” provide opportunities for even greater accomplishments for the 2026 Blue Darters, now is an appropriate time to acknowledge the exceptional job head coach Marcus Neeson has done in stopping the hemorrhaging of players leaving the program, rebuilding bonds in the community, encouraging the young football players of Apopka High School to remain at Apopka and leading his players with a spirit of resilience and optimism.
The Talkin’ Old School with Roger Franklin Williams sports talk show on FM 94.9/AM 950 THE ANSWER will highlight the annual “Battle for the Mayor’s Cup” with a remote program from Frogger’s Grille and Bar Apopka on Thursday October 29 from 6pm-9pm.
The program will include interviews with Blue Darter Coach Marcus Neeson and assistant coaches, as well as Blue Darter players and alumni. The program is part of the Frogger’s Spirit Night Series; Frogger’s will donate 20% of proceeds from 6pm-9pm to Apopka High Athletics.
