Hello Folks,

I hope you are havin’ a great week, and you got a chance to do some fishin’ over the weekend. The specks are startin’ to bite and lots of folks are gettin’ some jigs and minners and goin’ speck fishin’.

Lake Monroe, Lake Jesup, and Lake Woodruff are producin’ some nice stringers of specks. Most folks are driftin’ open water with jigs tipped with a minner. If the water is stained or dirty, make sure you use brightly colored jigs like chartreuse, orange, or bright green with glitter. If you can find some gold ice jigs, they will work as well. Take the jigs and tip them with minners and you should be good to go. You can also catch some specks in Lake Yale, Lake Griffin, and John’s Lake.

They had a speck tournament on John’s Lake last Saturday. You were allowed to weigh in seven specks per team. The winnin’ weight was a little over 13 lbs. The biggest speck was 2.4 lbs. Those were some nice specks they caught.

While the speck tournament was goin’ on, Rick and I were fishin’ for bass. We should have been fishin’ for specks instead. Rick caught a real nice bass about 2.5 lbs. I had one bite. It was a long day on the water. That bein’ said, the bass fishin’ on the Harris Chain has been real good, especially over the weekend. The Lake County Sheriffs Office had its fifth annual bass tournament on the Harris Chain over the weekend. The winnin’ stringer of five bass weighed 37.71 lbs. Congratulations to Lee Stalvey and Jason Caldwell for winnin’ the tournament. The biggest bass of the tournament weighed in at 10.54 lbs. The team of Terry Washburn and Greg Walters caught the big bass of the tournament. It’s safe to say the bass are bitin’ in the Harris Chain.

There is an FLW tournament on the Harris Chain this week. You can go to the weigh-ins at Venetian Gardens in Leesburg and watch the anglers weigh in their day’s catch. So get the family and go watch the weigh-in’.

The bass fishin’ has been good on the Butler Chain, too. Captain Paul Solomon has been takin’ his clients to the chain and catchin’ some nice bass. There are a lot of bait pods in the chain and you have to find ‘em in order to catch some bass. You can also locate the bass by watchin’ the birds divin’ on the baitfish. Paul was on a school of baitfish first thing in the mornin’ and the first fish they caught was a 10 lb. bass. They were catchin’ their bass on silver jiggin’ spoons.

The Kissimmee Chain has been good for bass, too. You will do best with shiners fished along the shoreline cover. If you like to fish with artificials, try slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits or swim-baits. We have a full moon comin’ up on March 1. The bass fishin’ should get better each day as we move toward the full moon.

Well, I hope you get on the water and do some fishin’ this week. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: bass are spawnin’.

Save a few and good luck!
