I hope everyone had a great week and you had a chance to do some fishin’. The weather is gettin’ cooler and this weekend should be a great weekend to do some fishin’ with the temperatures gettin’ into the 60s.
Folks are startin’ to catch a few specks in most of the lakes in our area. Some good spots to catch some specks would be in Lake Monroe, the Harris Chain, and the Kissimmee Chain. Lake Griffin and Big Lake Harris have been producin’ some specks in deeper water. You will do best by driftin’ with minners or jigs tipped with minners for good results. Look for some drop-offs or any type of change in the lake’s bottom and you should find some specks hangin’ around those areas.
We had a full moon this week, so the fishin’ should pick back up this weekend. Next month’s full moon and some colder weather will get the specks closer to shore to spawn but we are still a few weeks away. Folks are reportin’ that, with the cooler weather, the bass are startin’ to bite better each week. You need to look for bass feedin’ on bait-fish in the lakes or the bait pods in the St. Johns River. If you can find some runnin’ water or feeder creeks that have some water flowin’ into the lake or the river, you should find some bass hangin’ around those areas. Top-water baits and swim-baits will work as well as a lipless crankbait.
You can also catch some specks in the Kissimmee Chain. Most of the specks are still in deeper water, but if you troll the lakes or drift with the wind you should be able to catch enough specks for supper. You will do best with jigs tipped with a minner and once you locate a school of ‘em, keep driftin’ back and forth until they quit bitin’.
The Butler Chain has been good for specks and bass. Most of the specks are bein’ caught in the deeper parts of the lake, and in the deeper holes located throughout the chain. Again, you can troll or drift with jigs tipped with minners over the drop-offs and the deep holes. The bass fishin’ has been good on the chain as well. The bass seem to be feedin’ on the bait-fish just out from the grass line. Slow-sinkin’ Senko-type baits and plastic worms have been workin’ the best. Also, keep a lipless crankbait tied onto one of your rods in case the bass come up schoolin’ around the boat. You can also try usin’ a fluke-type bait on the schoolers.
