Only one Apopka-area school’s state-issued grade changed from the previous year as Rock Springs Elementary jumped two letter grades from a C to an A.

The Florida Department of Education released the grades for the schools on Thursday, July 11, past press time.

Rock Springs was one of two Apopka-area schools to receive an A grade from the state. Wolf Lake Elementary received its third A grade in a row.

Four local schools – Apopka High, Wolf Lake Middle, Dream Lake Elementary, and Apopka Elementary – received grades of B from the state Department of Education.

Receiving a C grade from the state were Wekiva High, Piedmont Lakes Middle, Apopka Middle, Lakeville Elementary, Zellwood Elementary, Lovell Elementary, and Clay Springs Elementary.

Phillis Wheatley Elementary was the lone local school to receive a D grade from the state.

For Rock Springs Elementary, it was the 10th time to receive an A grade, but the first time since 2011.

A grade of A is also common for Wolf Lake Elementary as it has received an A grade in 11 of the 13 years the school has been in existence.

Apopka High has received a grade of B eight times over the past dozen years along with three C grades and one A grade (2014).

Over its 12 years of existence, Wekiva High has received a B grade four times and a D once. The others have been a grade of C.

As expected, Rock Springs Elementary Principal Nathan Hay was happy for his school’s grade.

“I am very excited,” he said. “Getting Rock Springs Elementary back to an A was a big goal when I became the principal of Rock Springs.

“The students, teachers, and community have worked very hard and have been so supportive. For the longest time, Wolf Lake Elementary has been the only A school in Apopka, and now Rock Springs can represent Apopka as an A school as well.”
