Prime time for fishin’ in Central Florida is just around corner

Hello Folks,

I hope everyone is getting’ all things in order for the new year. We’ve already got almost one month in the books. Where does the time go? We are gettin’ ready to go into our prime time for fishin’ in Central Florida. Once all these cold fronts get done, things should settle down and the fishin’ should kick into gear.

Right now, the fishin’ is hit or miss. The specks should start bitin’ real soon. Some folks are catchin’ a few specks in Lake Monroe, Lake Woodruff, and the Butler Chain. You will have to drift open water with jigs tipped with a minner until you locate ‘em.

The water temperature is still pretty cool in most of the lakes and with all the cold fronts comin’ to town, the fishin’ has been good and not so good. One day the bass fishin’ is off and the next day it’s on again.

This past weekend, Rick and I fished the Butler Chain. We only caught five bass and Rick caught three of those bass in the last 20 minutes of the day. We did miss two bass flippin’ but that was it for the day. The next day on Sunday they had a tournament on the Butler Chain and it took five bass that weighed a little over 18 lbs. to win. Randle Coble and his 90-year-old father John won the tournament. So, all I can say is go fishin’ and hopefully, you will catch ‘em on the day you go.

My co-workers fished John’s Lake on Saturday and they caught three bass. They fished from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. They didn’t catch their first bass until 2:45 p.m. So if you want to go fishin’, go. You might just hit ‘em on the day they want to bite. As I have said before, a bad day fishin’ is still better than a good day at work.

A few more shad are showin’ up in the St. John’s River. This is the time of year they come into the river to spawn. They are a bunch of fun to catch, so give them a try if you’re not havin’ any luck with the bass or the specks.

Before we get into spawnin’ season for bass, you need to go to TrophyCatchFlorida.com and register for this program. You could win a new bass boat and other prizes. After you register and you legally catch a largemouth bass that is heavier than 8 lbs. and release that bass back into the water alive, you could be a winner. Go to the website I mentioned and you will see how the program works and the rules and regulations for this great program in Florida.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope to see you on the water real soon.

Tip of the week: go fishin’.

Save a few and good luck!
