Lake levels rise and shut down boat ramps near us

Hello Folks,

I hope everyone made it through the storm we had last week. Hurricane Milton was a doozy. I hope and pray your family and friends survived and I hope you didn’t have too much damage. We had a little damage, but the main thing is we lost power. I’m sure lots of folks lost power, and hopefully, by now your power has been restored. We stayed at my daughter’s house because they had a generator.

I’m glad it was cooler at nights after Milton. The weather has been great since the storm. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been ready for some cooler days. Summers are gettin’ kinda old.

I talked to Kyle at Bitter’s Bait & Tackle and he reports that there isn’t much fishin’ goin’ on right now. The storm we had last week has caused the lake levels to rise, and that’s keeping folks off the water.

Kyle reports that a lot of boat ramps are closed due to high water. I’m sure you have seen all the floodin’ up and down the St. Johns River – from here all the way up to Astor. Some communities are flooded out and the water keeps risin’.

The latest news that I have on ramps bein’ closed for fishin’ has been the Butler Chain, the Maitland Chain, the Conway Chain, and Johns Lake, all due to high water. Folks are fishin’ the Harris Chain and the Kissimmee Chain. Kyle reports that folks are catchin’ some bass where the runnin’ water is flowin’ from lake to lake on the Kissimmee Chain.

I wanted to let everyone know that durin’ the storm, sewage was dumped into Lake Griffin. The report says that 1,925,000 gallons of sewage was dumped into Lake Griffin. They did recover over 200,000 gallons, but I’m sure the lake was affected from this accident. They say a backup generator shorted out when the automatic transfer switch closed the generator breaker due to flooding.

I would like to congratulate Bobby Bakewell on his win this past weekend. Bobby is from Central Florida and has been fishin’ in Central Florida all his life. His Dad makes the Bakewell Jigs that can be found in tackle shops in Central Florida. Bobby fished the last open tournament of the year for BASS. The BASS Open tournament was held on Lake Martin, located in Alabama.

Bobby has been fishin’ the opens to get a chance to qualify for the BASS Elite Series next year. He came up a little short this year, but I’m sure he will be back next year gunnin’ for a chance to fish the Elites. Bobby won the tournament with a 3-day total of 35 pounds, 15 ounces. On championship day, he anchored his stringer with a 4-pound 10-ounce big bass. That big bass won the Phoenix Boats Big Bass of the tournament. Bobby’s win also punched his ticket to the Bass Master Classic at Lake Roy Roberts in March of 2025. The Classic will be held in Texas in a town 10 miles north of Denton. Bobby also collected $26,933 dollars for his win.

Congrats to Bobby on a great year of fishin’ and to be able to qualify for the BASS Master Classic is an honor in itself.

Well, folks, that’s it for this week. I hope the weather settles down for a while and we all can go fishin’. We have a full moon this week so hopefully that will help, too.

See ya next week.

Tip of the week: Full Moon

Save a few and good luck!
