Four qualify for two City Council seats in March election

There will be races on the ballot for each of the two seats up for election on the Apopka City Council.

Incumbent commissioners Doug Bankson and Kyle Becker will each face an opponent in an effort to seek a second four-year term.

Bankson’s Seat 3 opponent is Leroy Bell, who unsuccessfully ran two years ago against then-Commissioner Diane Velazquez, who was eventually defeated by Alice Nolan.

Becker, the Seat 4 incumbent, will be challenged by Lorena Potter, a retired city employee who is a political newcomer.

The qualifying period ended on Monday, December 9, at noon.

With two candidates in each race, it means the races will be decided during the election set for Tuesday, March 17, 2020. There will be no need for a runoff election in April.

The two Apopka races will be on the same ballot as the presidential preference primary race.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, and the voting sites for the city election will be the same as the presidential preference primary. Early voting for the March 17 election will be held March 2-15. Information about the early voting times and sites will be released prior to the presidential preference primary.

All city commissioners and the mayor are elected at-large in the non-partisan municipal election.

The qualifying fee for commissioners was $540, based on a salary of $13,500.

Voter registration books for the 2020 city election are open now and will close on February 18, 2020, at 5 p.m.

For more information about the election, call the city clerk’s office at 407-703-1704.
