Fishin’ hasn’t been very good with lots wind howling

Hello Folks,

I hope you had a great week. I wish I could say the fishin’ is fantastic right now but the gale force winds from last week and all the cold fronts movin’ in and out has kept a lot of folks off the water. I really don’t blame them because I didn’t go fishin’ myself due to the weather. Hopefully, that will change this week.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that it’s been kinda slow this week due to the weather. Folks haven’t been goin’ speck fishin’ due to white caps on Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. If the weather settles down, we should be able to get on the water and do some fishin’. Hopefully, the specks will start bitin’ again on the upcomin’ new moon. We have a new moon on February 20, so the fish should start bitin’ then.

Last weekend, they held the Big Bass Tour on the Harris Chain from February 10-12. Ron Partin won the tournament with a 10.52 lb. big bass. There were four bass that hit the scales that weighed more than nine pounds.

I mentioned last week that MLF Bass Pro Tour would be holdin’ its tournament on the Kissimmee Chain this week. The tournament began Monday, February 13, and will end Saturday, February 18. By the time my article hits the stands, you can go see the awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18. MLF Bass Pro Tour anglers weigh their fish in the boat each time they catch one, so there won’t be a combined weigh-in tme on the final day. The awards ceremony will be held in at the ramp at West Lake Toho Marina. If you aren’t too busy, I’m sure you will enjoy the ceremony.

By the way, the fishin’ has been pretty good this week on the Kissimmee Chain. The pros are dealin’ with blue bird skies and not much wind and a slow bite. The bite has been better in the afternoon and they are catchin’ some nice pre-spawn and spawnin’ bass.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that a lot of anglers are goin’ down to the Headwaters and catchin’ some nice bass on shiners. This is a good time to catch your personal-best bass by usin’ shiners. The problem, Kyle says, is that it’s been kinda hard to get shiners this time of the year, so before you go fishin’ and, if you want to use shiners, make sure your favorite tackle shop has ’em in stock.

Well, folks, I wish I had more good news on the fishin’ but I’m sure it’s gonna get better as the weather settles in our area. Also, as a side note, the R.D. Keene Park on the Butler Chain is still closed. I checked early this week and the water is still too high to open the ramp. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: new moon.

Save a few and good luck!
