A natural disaster can leave you reeling financially as well as emotionally. The Skip Strohm Agency is here to help by providing answers to some of the important questions regarding what to do “After the Storm”.

How do I file a claim? You have several options. You may call our toll-free claims number at (877) 581-4862. You can also file a claim online using our My Security First customer portal or our free mobile app, Security First Mobile. For more information, please visit SecurityFirstFlorida.com.

What happens after the claim is filed? You will be contacted by an examiner to discuss your claim, and a field adjuster will contact you to schedule an inspection of your property. The field adjuster will inspect your home and estimate repairs for any covered damage. If your claim exceeds your Hurricane Deductible, we will issue a payment for the amount over the deductible. If needed, we can help you find a licensed and insured contractor in our area to repair your home.

Are my evacuation expenses, such as hotel room costs covered by my homeowner’s insurance policy? Expenses for evacuating are only covered if you were ordered to evacuate by a civil authority, and only for covered perils. Most evacuations were for flooding and storm surge, which are excluded from coverage under your homeowner’s insurance policy.

However, if you return and find your home unlivable due to hurricane damage that’s covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy, then additional living expenses are covered by our homeowner’s insurance policy in accordance with the terms and limits of your policy.

I can’t live in my home. Does my homeowner’s insurance policy provide coverage? Coverage D, also called Loss of Use, that’s listed on your policy provides you with reimbursement for additional living expenses that you incur, if your insured home is unlivable due to a covered loss.

The estimate I received from my contractor is higher than the settlement amount provided by Security First Insurance. What do I do? If the estimate provided by your contractor is higher, you should notify us before work begins. We will work with your contractor to ensure your home is repaired correctly and that the repairs are covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy.

My roof leaked from the storm. Is water damage caused by my roof leak covered by my homeowner’s insurance policy? There is coverage for the interior damage even without a storm-related opening, unless there is a Water Damage exclusion on the policy. If your home is damaged, you should file a claim, and we will inspect your home so that we can determine if coverage applies to your loss.

If my tree falls and damages someone else’s property, should I file a claim?
If a tree on your property falls due to a covered loss, such as wind or lightning, and damages your home or another structure covered under your policy, then filing a claim may be in your best interest. But in a case like this, your policy does not provide coverage for damage to someone else’s property, so if your property is not damaged by the tree then there is no loss to report.
