Colbie Cagle catches 10 bass weighing in at more than 40 pounds

Hello Folks,

I don’t want to sound like a broken record but we need some rain.

Our lakes are very low and some much-needed rain would be awesome right now. I’m sure you have noticed it as much as I have and it’s brown everywhere you look. So, keep your prayers goin’ for some rain.

The fishin’ has been kinda good most weeks. Rick and his brother-in-law Greg Fugate from Kentucky finished their week of fishin’ and the best lake they fished was the Butler Chain. They fished there two times and caught 30 to 40 bass each trip. They fished the Harris Chain and only caught four bass, and Johns Lake and only caught five bass. Rick reported that Johns Lake was full of hydrilla and was topped out at least 30 to 40 yards off-shore. I believe with the lower lake levels and the grass toppin’ out, those ole bass have moved to deeper water for the summer.

If you go bass fishin’, look for changes in the water temperatures. The bigger bass like cooler water, movin’ water, and deeper water durin’ the summer. Just a few degrees in water temperatures may help you find some bass. So, don’t be like the angler that says we caught’em here last time. Try different approaches to your bass fishin’ and you may be surprised by findin’ new areas, and new ways to fish.

The American Bass Anglers held a two-day tournament on the Harris Chain. Congrats to Colbie Cagle who won the two-day event last weekend. Colbie weighed in 10 bass that hit the scales at 44.27 pounds. He also caught an 8.01 big bass that gave him an additional $500. Colbie also cashed a check for $10,000 for the win. Also, congrats to our own Bobby Bakewell on his second-place finish. Bobby weighed in 10 bass that hit the scales at 42.96 pounds. He also caught a 7.9 pound big bass to help him finish second. Bobby cashed a $4,500 check for his second place finish.

If you want to catch some panfish, the season is just about over. We have a new moon this week and this weekend should wrap up the bluegill and shellcracker season. I’m not sayin’ you can’t go catch’em, it’s just gonna be a little slower than it was last month with the full moon. If you do go, make sure you get some red worms, crickets or catch you some grass-shrimp and see if they are bitin’.

You know, we catch a-lot of specks durin’ the cooler months of the year. You can still catch some specks durin’ the summer, but they are in the deepest parts of the lake you like to fish. Most folks like to fish with a jig tipped with a minner. The jig gets down to the bottom quicker, and once it hits bottom, just reel up your line so the jig and minner are just off the bottom. If there are any specks in the area, they will locate your bait and then it’s time to catch’em.

Also, with summer gettin’ here, make sure you take along plenty of Gatorade and water to keep yourself hydrated while you are fishin’. You need to wear long-sleeve shirts and put your sunscreen on so you don’t get sunburned. I’ve started wearing long pants to fish in so my legs don’t get sun-burned. If you do like to wear shorts, make sure to put some sunscreen on your legs durin’ the day. Once the sun gets up, I like to wear a straw hat and a bluff on my face. The bluff covers up my face and my ears and my neck. I feel like the straw hat allows air to flow through my hat and that helps keep me cool.

Well, I hope you get a chance to do some fishin’ this week, and I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: Stay hydrated

Save a few and good luck!
