The Apopka Progressive Senior Citizens’ Club celebrated 53 years of service, fellowship and community Tuesday during its annual Founders’ Day celebration at the John H. Bridges Community Center.
Founded in 1973, the organization has grown to more than 160 members from Central Florida, Georgia and the Caribbean, according to Dr. Yvonne Williams, who presented the club’s history during the program.
“Founders’ Day reminds us that our community stands on a foundation built by extraordinary individuals,” Williams said. “They lifted us to this moment, and we honor them by building the future that they imagined.”
The club’s community work includes awarding scholarships, donating prom dresses to high school students, supporting local elementary schools, providing toys for children in the John Bridges Head Start program and volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank. Members also participate in National Night Out, back-to-school events and holiday assistance efforts.
Current president Sandra Gordon and vice president Rose Morris were among club leaders recognized during the celebration, along with former presidents and descendants of the organization’s founders.
The program also featured music by the Apopka High School Jazz Ensemble, prayer, scripture readings and poetry. Representatives of other senior organizations attended, while the Rotary Club of Apopka was recognized among the event’s community supporters.
