Apopka fire and police will compete in friendly charity BBQ contest

Sonny’s BBQ is bringing together the Apopka Fire and Police departments for a friendly BBQ competition at Sonny’s BBQ Apopka on Saturday, January 13, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The winning team will be awarded $1,000 towards their department or charity of choice, as well as a trophy and certificate. The runner-up will receive $500 and a certificate.

For Team Fire, the prize will go towards the Armando Borjas Jr. Scholarship Foundation. For Team Police, the prize will go towards the Shop with a Cop program.

Judging the competition are Vic and Kitty Vierbickas, certified Florida BBQ Association Judges; Christopher Bates, lead chef of the Magnet Academy of Culinary Arts at Wekiva High School; and Pam and Clay Murphy, Sonny’s BBQ franchisees.

The community is invited to the event to watch the teams compete. Sonny’s BBQ will be offering an $8.99 Pork Big Deal and Happy Hour specials along with free samples and a prize wheel. The event will also include activities like getting an insider’s view of a police swat car, a fire truck, face painting, and balloon art.

Sonny’s BBQ Apopka is located at 2210 E. Semoran Blvd., Apopka.
