Apopka Mayor Bryan Nelson, (r), and city attorney Michael Rodriguez shake hands to solidify a friendly wager the two have for the Class 4M state championship football game that pits their high school alma maters against each other. The loser must donate $20 to the winning school. Nelson graduated from Apopka High School while Rodriguez is an alumnus of Miami Columbus High School. Those two schools’ football teams will clash in a battle for the state title at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, December 17, at 7 p.m. It will be the third time for Apopka and Columbus to meet in the state championship game as the Blue Darters defeated the Explorers 30-23 in 2014, while Columbus toppled Apopka 21-20 in 2019.
