Summer may still be hanging on, but Apopka families can already start planning fall weekends. The city calendar has a run of free or low-cost community events from early September into November, with options for children, first responders, runners and neighbors who want an easy reason to get out of the house.

1. Night Out on 5th, Sept. 4
   The city’s fall run starts downtown from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, on Fifth Street at the Market. The city lists bounce houses, Touch-A-Truck with the Apopka Police Department and Apopka Fire Department, and Snowie’s Sno Cones. Think dinner, a walk downtown and home before the night gets late.
2. City of Apopka 9/11 Memorial Service, Sept. 11
   The 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks falls on a Friday this year. Apopka’s Fire and Police departments are scheduled to host the city’s memorial service at 8:30 a.m. in front of Apopka City Hall, 120 E. Main St. The city says the ceremony will honor the victims, survivors and first responders, with the flag lowered to half-staff.
3. Apopka Hispanic Heritage Celebration, Sept. 26
   The fifth annual celebration is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Kit Land Nelson Park, 10 S. Forest Ave. The timing gives families an early-evening option after the heat of the day. Check the city event page closer to the date for entertainment, vendor and parking details.
4. Apopka Police Department Personal Safety Day, Oct. 10
   This free Apopka Police Department event is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Apopka Community Center, 519 S. Central Ave. The best fit is households with older teens, college students or adults who want a practical Saturday morning on personal safety.
5. Halloween in the Park and Halloween Highway, Oct. 24 and Oct. 28
   Families have two city Halloween options before the holiday itself. Halloween in the Park is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24, at Kit Land Nelson Park and is listed as a free family-friendly event. Halloween Highway follows from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, on East Station Street in front of True Coffee, with Apopka police hosting a drive-thru trick-or-treat event.
6. Team Gina 5K, Oct. 31
   The Team Gina 5K lands on Halloween morning at the Northwest Recreation Complex, 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway. The city lists the event from 6:30 to 9 a.m., with a 7:30 a.m. race start and registration required. Runners and walkers support the Gina McReynolds Foundation, and costumes are likely to feel more natural than usual this year.
7. Horsepower for Heroes, Nov. 7
   Apopka police are planning the inaugural Horsepower for Heroes car show from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 7, at Kit Land Nelson Park. The event is positioned around veterans and community support, making it a fitting bridge from Halloween weekend toward Veterans Day.
