Zellwood Historical Society program will feature history of paintings

2045

The Zellwood Historical Society is hosting its February program with the theme “Heart for Art” at the Zellwood museum, 3160 Union St., Zellwood, on Thursday, February 23, at 7 p.m.

The program will feature the history of the paintings that were left to the Zellwood community in perpetuity by Edith Fairfax Davenport, a cousin of artist James McNeill Whistler.

Among Whitsler’s most famous paintings are “Arrangement in Grey and Black,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.”

Davenport was granted special permission to paint two copies of his original. One hangs in the Zellwood museum and the other is in the Lowell Museum of Art in Lowell, Mass.

Davenport resided in Zellwood from 1884 until 1955. She was an artist of distinction herself, receiving many awards for her art. She is listed in “An International Dictionary of Women Artists Born before 1900.”

She studied art in Paris, France and Florence, Italy for 12 years.
