The last two months have flown by as The Apopka Chief team has implemented a variety of changes to better serve the community under new ownership. These include increasing circulation from 4,000 to 10,000 weekly print editions, adding Publix inserts, moving the paper to full color, making the print edition free, and posting stories online as they’re ready—all while increasing our focus on local reporting.
With this week’s issue, you will also see a new flag atop the front of the newspaper. We wanted to give it a thoughtful refresh while staying true to our mission and rooted in our history, most notably with a tagline that keeps the Chief’s storied past at the forefront.
You will note the front-page banner does not drop as deep on the page as the old one. Our goal was to bring more content above the fold, so that it’s easily viewable at a glance. We want the most important stories to be immediately visible, so that even if you’re simply walking by a rack or box, you can see the talk of the town.
Emphasizing the trust Apopka has in its hometown newspaper is important to us, because, while numerous things have changed, many important things have not changed. Chief among them (pardon the pun) is that The Apopka Chief is still committed to the same local journalism the community knows and appreciates.
We will continue to show up at local events and meetings. We will continue to cover local sports and community groups. We will continue to report on local government with accuracy and fairness.
In short, we will continue to be the voice of Apopka, as we have been for the last 102 years.
Look for more exciting announcements soon as we position the Chief for its second century of service to the community.
The Apopka Chief is an award-winning weekly newspaper serving the greater Apopka area in Central Florida since 1923.
