This Thanksgivin’ weekend is a great time to take family fishin’

Hello Folks,

I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgivin’. I hope you and your family were blessed and thankful for all the things we get to enjoy durin’ this time of the year.

Let’s start off with some good news. I got a phone call this week from Orange County Parks and Recreation. They have opened up five ramps, and two of them are in our area. The Magnolia Park and Trimble Park boat ramps are open. Unfortunately, R.D. Keane Park on the Butler Chain is still closed due to high water. So, we are gettin’ there, it’s just takin’ a little longer for the water to subside in some of our lakes. If you want any updated information, visit their website at https://bit.ly/3EntLnu.

Kyle at Bitter’s Bait and Tackle reports that the ramps in their area, which includes Lake Monroe, Lake Harney, Lake Jesup, and the St. Johns River are still closed. The water is still high at these ramps. Lots of folks are fishin’ the Kissimmee Chain and catchin’ some nice bass on shiners. You can catch some bass on artificials like plastic worms and top-water lures early in the mornin’.

The bass fishin’ on the Harris Chain has been a little slow for most folks. I’m gettin’ reports that the bass are scattered throughout the chain in all kinds of cover. Some bass are bein’ caught in brush piles, submerged eel-grass, submerged hydrilla flats, and some bass have started to spawn, so you need to try everything in your tackle box.

Since the bass are scattered throughout the chain, this will give you a chance to fish out of your comfort zone and try something new. I know sometimes I get comfortable with one style of fishin’ because I have had some good and great results. I will stick with a certain type of bait and, because I have caught some big bass or a bunch of bass on that lure, I continue to fish with it and not try something out of the box. We all have lots of lures in our tackle boxes and we keep goin’ back to our favorite lure that we caught bass on the last time we went fishin’. We have confidence in that lure or that particular plastic worm and we stick with it because we know that sometime durin’ the day we are goin’ to catch a bass on it.

My buddy Rick whom I fish with is the best worm fisherman that I know. You know why he is the best? Because he fishes with plastic worms 99.9 percent of the time. He has proven to me many, many times that he has confidence in a certain plastic worm, and he will fish with that worm until the sun goes down. As a matter of fact, we have a special plastic worm and a special color of a worm that we fish with, and when either one of us catches a bass on it, we ask each other what we caught the bass on? We will say, ‘I caught it on ol’ faithful.’ We both know which worm that was and that’s it.

Well, that’s it for this week. I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: Happy Thanksgivin’.

Save a few and good luck!
