News of Apopka in 2019: Pine tree removal was city issue in April

Note: This is the second of a four-part series reviewing the news of Apopka in 2019 as written in the pages of The Apopka Chief. This week covers April, May, and June.

The Apopka City Council voted to remove hundreds of pine trees from the area in and near the Northwest Recreation Complex due to an infestation by the flatheaded wood borer, a beetle whose larvae cause damage to trees by boring into the trees. Many of the pine trees near the complex were either already dead or were affected by the beetle. The city contracted with a logging company to remove the trees. A tree replacement plan was later approved by the City Council.

The St. Johns River Water Management District began work on the levee at the Lake Apopka North Shore. The levee serves not only as a separator between the lake and the North Shore but is also part of the water district’s recreational Lake Apopka Loop Trail … A ribbon cutting was held to open the Lake Lucie Conservation Area off Rainey Road in Northwest Orange County. The 166-acre parcel was purchased by Orange County government in 2005 through the county’s Green Place Program.

Apopka toddler Wyatt Toler was chosen as the 2019 March for Babies Orlando ambassador. He is the son of Kerry and Brandon Toler of Apopka. He spent the first 46 days of his life in the newborn intensive care unit after weighing only four pounds, six ounces … Apopka High senior Elena Korkes received a $40,000 scholarship through the Amazon Future Engineer scholarship program. She was one of 100 high school seniors from 32 states across the nation to receive the first-year scholarship to study computer science in college.

The Wekiva High girls basketball team was honored by the Orange County Commission for winning the Class 9A state championship … Former Apopka City Commissioner Kathy Till published a book, ‘A Journey to Yes,’ in an effort to help those looking to advocate for their cause with state legislators … 2008 Apopka High graduate James Chan was named “Young Floridian of the Year” by the University of Florida’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service … The Apopka Blue Darters boys volleyball team claimed the top seed for the District 4 tournament for the first time in a decade.

The busy intersection of Rock Springs Road and Welch Road was getting plenty of attention from staff at both the city of Apopka and Orange County government … The cities of Apopka and Mount Dora formed a reuse water partnership with a ceremonial groundbreaking event at Kelly Park Road and Golden Gem Road … Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and County Commissioner Christine Moore were among those who took a tour of the area to learn about affordable housing options in Northwest Orange County.
