A motorcyclist died in a hospital as a result of a vehicular collision with a garbage truck this morning at S.R. 436 (East Semoran Boulevard) and Sheeler Avenue in Apopka, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The incident occurred at 5:21 a.m. today, Tuesday, May 2.
A 2022 Mack garbage truck was traveling southbound on Sheeler Avenue approaching S.R. 436 (East Semoran Boulevard) in the left turn lane.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle, a 1986 Yamaha XV1100, was traveling northbound on Sheeler Avenue also approaching S.R. 436 (East Semoran Boulevard). The garbage truck driver attempted to make a left turn to travel eastbound on S.R. 436; the motorcyclist proceeded northbound through the intersection.
As a result, the front of the garbage truck struck the front of the motorcycle. It is still under investigation which vehicle had the green traffic light, according to the FHP.
The garbage truck driver is a 51-year-old male from Apopka, and the motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, was a 57-year-old male from Orlando, according to the FHP. The motorcyclist’s next of kin was notified.
The garbage truck driver was not injured and remained on scene. The motorcyclist was transported to AdventHealth Apopka and pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation.
