To fund a fitness trail at Kit Land Nelson Park, city staff is exploring the option of applying for a $200,000 state grant that requires the city to match $80,000 if approved, the Development Review Committee (DRC) discussed at their Wednesday, February 1, meeting.

The DRC is made up of city staff representatives who assess submitted applications for development projects and special events.

The proposed fitness trail would have fitness stations with exercise equipment.

Coming from the state Department of Environmental Protection, the $200,000 grant would not require amending the city’s capital improvements plan (CIP), said city planner Kyle Wilkes. The grant would be for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.

The City Council gave first approval of the updated CIP on December 7, and second approval on December 21 at their meetings.

The updated CIP incorporates capital facility maintenance and capacity upgrades for the public services and recreation departments.

Since the grant application is due at the end of February, Wilkes recommended that the issue be brought before the Planning Commission at its Tuesday, February 14, meeting.

As mandated by city policy, the five-year CIP must be updated every year after review by several city departments.
