Kenard Lang has resigned as football coach at Wekiva High School.
Athletic director Valerie Miyares confirmed his resignation on Thursday, January 7, and said Lang is evidently one of the top candidates for the head coaching position at Oak Ridge High School, which recently opened up.

Lang was 19-12 in his three years at Wekiva, posting records of 5-5 and 8-3 before finishing 6-4 last year. In 2014, he led the Mustangs to the only playoff appearance in school history. Wekiva fell to Orange Park Oakleaf 17-14 in that game.

“Coach Lang told us this morning, he has decided to resign from his position as head coach of the football program at Wekiva High School,” Miyares said. “The resignation was a surprise to everyone. However, coach Lang specifically told us the decision had nothing to do with any issues regarding the school or any individuals and the time spent at the school was enjoyable. After much thought and relying on a spiritual guidance, the decision is what is best for him at this point during his career and life. No specific considerations or reasons were discussed with him.
“We are sorry to see him leave and will miss working with him. But we also wish him the best and do not want to interfere with anyone doing what is best for himself or herself. Under coach Lang’s guidance, the football program has benefited from not suffering through any stagnation or lack of continuing forward progress and the program.”

“Principal (Michelle) Erickson and I spoke for a few minutes this morning about beginning the search for a replacement after the resignation,” Miyares said. “At this point (Thursday afternoon) we have discussed and talked about some general observations, but no definite or detailed decisions we made. Tomorrow morning, another meeting will take place with the purpose being to make more definite and detailed decisions.
“In general, the priority is to put the position in a position for moving forward and upward to continue.”

Spring football practice begins April 25.
