Five bass weighed in at 17 pounds on Johns Lake

Hello Folks,

We are into week two of the new year, and the fishin’ is not too bad. Folks are gettin’ out there and catchin’ some specks, and the bass fishin’ is pretty good, too.

My buddy Rich fished his club tournament on Johns Lake on Sunday. The winnin’ stringer of five bass weighed in at 17 pounds. The winner of the tournament said he caught all of his fish on Rat-L-Traps. The bass fishin’ on the Butler Chain is doin’ good, as well. Folks are catchin’ 20 to 30 bass on most days. You can catch ‘em on a variety of lures, includin’ swim-jigs, chatter-baits, and plastic worms.

The bass fishin’ on the Harris Chain is doin’ good, if you are in the right spot. MLF held their High School Fishing team tournament on the chain Sunday, January 7th. Team Florida, consisting of Dylan Quilatan of Windermere and Tommy Rust of Winter Springs, brought five bass to the scales that weighed 29 pounds-0 ounces. They won the MLF Abu Garcia High School tournament presented by Tackle Warehouse Open. There were 38 teams that competed in the tournament, and 10 percent of those teams will go to the High School Fishing National Championship. Again guys, great job on your win on the Harris Chain.

Kyle at Bitter’s B&T reports that some folks are gettin’ out there and catchin’ some specks in Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. It’s that time of the year, and now is your chance to catch some nice stringers of specks. All you need is a bucket of minners, a gold #2 or #4 hook, a cork, or a bobber, a speck pole and you are good to go. If you don’t know where to fish, look for other boats on the water…and that’s where most of the specks are bein’ caught. Try not to move in on someone fishin’, but fish in that general area and you should be able to catch a few specks. Always be respectful of other folks fishin’ in that area.

The MLF is holdin’ their Abu Garcia College Fishing tournament on the Kissimmee Chain January 9th-11th. By the time this article is published, the tournament will be over. You can check the MLF website for daily and final results of the tournament.

Also, don’t forget the FWC meeting where the public is welcome, on January 24th. The Harris Chain Open House will be from 3 to 8 p.m. It will be held at the Venetian Center, 1 Dozier Circle, Leesburg, FL 34748.

Well, I hope everyone made it through the storm this week. I’ll see ya next week.

Tip of the week: Fishin’ is good.

Save a few and good luck!
