Fishin’ has been good in local lakes and rivers with warm weather

Jim-Keck-Goin-FishinHello Folks,

I sure hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hopefully, 2016 will bring plenty of good times for everyone’s family and plenty of good fishin’.

The weather over the holidays was pretty warm. I heard that this Christmas was the hottest Christmas in 91 years. All I know is, I went fishin’ Saturday and I had to wear sunscreen. You just don’t do that durin’ this time of the year.

The fishin’ has been really good, especially if you want to catch some specks. Most of the lakes and chains in our area are producin’ some nice stringers of specks.

Lake Monroe and Lake Harney have been good for specks. Most of the folks are driftin’ with jigs tipped with a minner. You need to use brightly colored jigs for good results.

We have been gettin’ some windy days on the water so be careful when you are on the bigger lakes like Lake Monroe.

If the wind isn’t too bad, try fishin’ for specks in the Harris Chain and the Kissimmee Chain. Lake Eustis and Lake Griffin have been good lakes to fish for specks in the Harris Chain. Most of the specks are bein’ caught on jigs tipped with a minner driftin’ mid-lake. I’m not gettin’ any reports of roe showin’ up in the specks that are bein’ caught. Lake Kissimmee and West Lake Toho have been the best lakes to catch some specks on that chain.

We had the full moon last week on Christmas Day so the fishin’ should be good this comin’ week and weekend.

The bass fishin’ is hit or miss. One day, the bite is on and the next you wonder were they went. The bass fishin’ on the Harris Chain has been good one day and then not so good the next. Most of the bass are bein’ caught on shiners and plastic worms. You can catch some of the bass on spinnerbaits and swim-baits. The bass fishin’ on the Kissimmee Chain has been pretty good in West Lake and Lake Kissimmee. You will do best with shiners or swim-baits. Plastic toads and frogs work best early in the mornin’ and then you need to fish the submerged hydrilla and eel-grass beds with plastic worms.

I did get on the water on Saturday and it was kinda tough. Rick and I caught and released 12 bass. Rick caught most of the bass and I just enjoyed the day on the water. A bad day’s fishin’ is still better than a good day at work. I hope you had a chance to get on the water and do some fishin’. I hope you and your family have a Blessed New Year. See ya next week.

Tip of the week: go fishin’.

Save a few and good luck!
