Due to the severe weather warnings in effect for Tropical Storm/Hurricane Helene, the Apopka Historical Society postponed the dedication ceremony for Mead’s Bottom mural.

The event was rescheduled for Friday, October 4, at 4 p.m., at the mural site, located at the corner of McGee and Sixth streets behind the Hilton Garden Inn.

The event will include a VIP reception at the Hilton Garden Inn, immediately following the mural unveiling ceremony. Guests will also get to meet local artist German Lemus, who painted the mural.

Mead’s Bottom mural will commemorate the legacy of the prominent black settlement of Mead’s Bottom, located south of U.S. Highway 441 and S.R. 436, bordered by McGee Street on the west and Sheeler Road on the east.

The area was named after Sarah Mead, who was born into slavery in 1836 in South Carolina, sold to a plantation owner in Georgia and ventured into Apopka around 1870.

The Apopka Chief and The Planter are weekly community newspapers, independently owned and family operated, that have served the greater Apopka area in Central Florida since 1923 and 1965 respectively.
