Apopka Fire Dept. gives safety tips on Thanksgiving turkey cooking

489

The Apopka Fire Department released tips about how to cook your Thanksgiving turkey safely yesterday, Sunday, November 24, on the department’s Facebook page.

Reminder! Thanksgiving is just four days away. If you haven’t done so already, make sure to move your turkey from the freezer to the fridge so that it has enough time to thaw before Thanksgiving.

If you are deep frying your turkey for Thanksgiving here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

• Tip 1: Ensure the turkey is COMPLETELY THAWED to prevent a fire or explosion hazard.

• Tip 2: Always use the fryer outdoors on a flat surface, safely away from structures, wooden decks, and covered patios.

• Tip 3: Keep children and pets away from the fryer to prevent tipping, even after the turkey is done. The oil is dangerously hot for hours.

• Tip 4: Use your safety tools: Oven mitts, gloves, and safety goggles.

• Tip 5: An overfilled cooking pot will cause cooking oil to spill when the turkey is put in. This could lead to a fire.

The Apopka Fire Department wants you to stay safe this Thanksgiving.
