Apopka City Council cancels August 24 budget workshop

2303

The Apopka City Council cancelled an originally scheduled August 24 budget workshop for the proposed fiscal year 2017 budget worth $102,264,752.

They came to this decision at their Tuesday, August 23, budget workshop.

At the July 26 workshop session, the City Council voted unanimously to raise the proposed property tax rate by a half-mill, which would equal $50 in additional annual taxes for every $100,000 in taxable property value. That was the first of three necessary votes to set the property tax rate.

Citing a need last month to find additional funds for various items such as five police officers, a new fire station, a new tower for the city’s internal communications, and other staffing needs at City Hall, the council voted to raise the property tax rate to 3.7678, up from the current 3.2678 mills.

There will be two public hearings on the budget next month, one September 7 and the other on September 21. As they did last year, the City Council can lower the tax rate in September.
