An Apopka Boy Scout’s 911 memorial on the front lawn of City Hall has garnered him the honor of having the top Eagle Scout project in the seven-county Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Tom Kelly, Central Florida Council awards team captain, said Boy Scout Christian Lamphere’s project was named the most outstanding for 2016 out of the 430 Eagle Scouts who completed the work for Boy Scouting’s top honor.

The Central Florida Council covers all of the middle part of the state and includes 11 scouting districts.

Lamphere’s project will move on to be judged for the U.S. Southern Region award. If he wins there, Lamphere will move on to the national competition with three other regional winners for a $25,000 top prize.

Lamphere and the other Eagle Scouts from 2016 will be honored for their work June 9 at a ceremony at the Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando.

This story will appear on page 1A of the Friday, February 24, issue of The Apopka Chief.
